## Exit-intent popup tools, compared

Exit intent is a signal that a visitor may be leaving. The popup can offer an email incentive, point to a useful page or ask why a purchase was not completed. The software’s job is to combine that timing with the right audience and an appropriate next action, not merely open a window whenever the cursor moves.

The eight tools below have confirmed exit-intent capability and lead our popup-focused ranking within that group. This is a comparison of the whole campaign toolkit around exit intent. Desktop cursor behaviour, mobile signals, frequency rules and other active popups all affect what the visitor actually sees.

| Tool | Popup score / 100 | Papa pick / month |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [1\. Klaviyo](#klaviyo) | 75.29 | $20.00 |
| [2\. Getsitecontrol](#getsitecontrol) | 74.52 | $19.00 |
| [3\. OptiMonk](#optimonk) | 71.21 | $29.00 |
| [4\. Privy](#privy) | 68.59 | $30.00 |
| [5\. Poptin](#poptin) | 60.21 | $25.00 |
| [6\. Sleeknote](#sleeknote) | 55.62 | $69.00 |
| [7\. ConvertFlow](#convertflow) | 54.76 | $299.00 |
| [8\. Pop Convert](#pop-convert) | 52.76 | $15.00 |

Prices are the selected Papa pick subscriptions. Exit-intent access and traffic limits can differ by plan; a paid email platform may already include signup-form triggers.

## What puts a tool higher on this list?

Popup Papa tests popup software and examines product documentation, pricing and published use cases. We assess tools against the same criteria, then give different capabilities more weight for different tasks. The numbers below are absolute scores: they do not depend on which other app a tool is compared with.

We use the Popups without email marketing profile and require confirmed exit intent. That profile concentrates the score on onsite campaign capabilities, forms, targeting, experiments, reporting and integrations rather than email sending. It is the same absolute profile available in the directory; there is no separate invented exit-intent score.

A high position indicates a broader campaign toolkit, not a measured advantage in predicting departures. Mobile exit behaviour is described separately where official documentation explains it. A responsive layout does not by itself establish a mobile exit trigger, and no app can guarantee that every departing visitor will see a campaign.

Klaviyo includes exit intent in its signup-form timing rules alongside delay, scroll and page-count conditions. Its strength is the connection between the popup and known subscriber data. An exit offer can be aimed at unknown visitors while recognised profiles or selected lists are excluded, reducing overlap with people already in the email programme.

Timing conditions can be combined, with an option to require all selected conditions. Frequency settings control how long a dismissed form stays hidden and whether it returns after completion. Campaign priority also helps coordinate automatically displayed forms. These controls matter when an exit offer follows a welcome invitation rather than operating alone.

Klaviyo documents desktop cursor movement and quick upward scrolling on mobile as exit signals. The mobile condition is an interpretation of behaviour, not detection of a closed browser. Forms are included in Free and paid email plans, while active profiles and channel usage drive the commercial limits. For an existing Klaviyo account, the exit form can feed the same list and welcome flow as other signup sources.

### Plan to compare

The paid Email tier makes sense as the list outgrows Free or requires more sending capacity. Do not upgrade just for a popup: Free already includes signup forms and automation within its limits.

Getsitecontrol combines exit intent with page rules, audience conditions and repeat-display controls. A widget can be limited to selected pages or URL patterns, and repeats can be suppressed after a view, closure or action. This provides more control than a single global setting that shows the same offer on every attempted departure.

The campaign can contain a signup form, a feedback question or a message with an action button. Conditional forms and multiple screens support a more detailed response when the visitor chooses to engage. For example, an exit survey can collect a reason instead of making every departure another discount opportunity. Those form capabilities contribute to the popup score alongside targeting.

Advanced triggers and audience controls belong to Pro and Pro Max. The selected Pro plan counts widget views, while Pro Max removes that view limit. Because the billing unit is the displayed widget rather than every site pageview, the scope of the exit campaign is directly relevant to capacity. Multiple sites and email sending remain separate cost considerations.

### Plan to compare

Pro unlocks the full feature set and removes branding. Pro Max adds unlimited widget views and a lower email sending rate, rather than more features.

OptiMonk treats exit intent as one trigger among delay, scroll, inactivity, click and custom events. Multiple triggers use OR, so an earlier delay can open the campaign before the visitor ever shows exit behaviour. The distinction matters when a campaign is intended specifically as a final invitation rather than a general welcome offer.

Audience settings can use traffic source and subscriber context, with Shopify adding cart and product conditions. Campaign priority and exposure rules coordinate several offers. The testing system can include a no-popup control group, which is useful when the question is whether an exit campaign adds value beyond the page itself rather than which of two designs gets more clicks.

Official mobile documentation describes tab changes, rapid upward scrolling and Back-button behaviour, with conditions around the entry page and browser support. Paid plans chiefly expand traffic, domains and AI capacity; Free already includes the feature set in the current offer. Its pageview allowance counts site traffic even when the exit popup never appears.

### Plan to compare

Essential adds capacity and a second domain. Free already includes all features and no branding; upgrade for traffic, domains or AI credits rather than feature access.

Privy’s display triggers include exit intent, time on page and scroll. It combines these with current, initial and referring URL rules, browsing history and store-specific audience data. This supports a more targeted exit campaign, such as a store offer tied to what the visitor has browsed rather than a universal message for every session.

Repeat timing and previous-signup exclusions help prevent repeated invitations. Rules can also refer to other displays a visitor has seen or submitted. That gives a welcome campaign and an exit campaign a relationship without assuming a formal priority queue. A/B testing supports configurable traffic ratios and stopping conditions based on time or participants.

Privy can collect email and SMS permissions, show store promotions and continue with email marketing. Its popup-only package differs from the combined email offer shown in the directory’s selected plan. For exit capture alone, the distinction is whether another platform already handles the follow-up. Traffic and contact limits should not be treated as interchangeable allowances.

### Plan to compare

Email + SMS is the pick when you want capture and follow-up in one product. The popup-only subscription is cheaper if another service already handles email.

Poptin offers exit intent alongside delay, scroll, page count, click count and inactivity. Its manual triggers act on the first condition reached, so adding another trigger can change a campaign from exit-only to a broader invitation. Page rules and scheduling then determine where and when that invitation is eligible.

The form builder supports email capture, consent and validation controls, while audience settings distinguish new and returning visitors. Converted visitors can be treated separately from people who merely closed the form. Shopify adds cart and customer conditions, with some deeper audience rules reserved for an upgrade. These settings influence the campaign as much as the exit detector itself.

The popup-only Free and Basic plans provide different visitor allowances; Growth combines popup activity with contact and email capacity. JavaScript and Autopilot controls are not equivalent to the standard manual exit trigger and can have different access requirements. Poptin’s help documentation also separates desktop exit behaviour from its mobile explanation.

### Plan to compare

Basic is our popup-only pick for one unbranded site with up to 10,000 visitors. For up to 5,000 visitors, also compare Growth: the 500-contact option is $19/month and includes unlimited domains, email and user management.

Sleeknote supports exit intent alongside automated, timed, scroll, click and SiteData triggers. Its audience conditions can use referrals, UTM parameters, cookies, page count and new-visitor status. A site can therefore give an exit campaign a distinct audience instead of simply repeating its first-visit offer.

Campaign show counts, total impressions per session and campaign order help coordinate a collection of onsite messages. Multi-step forms and destination-field mapping support offers that collect a preference as well as an email. A/B tests can split traffic between campaigns, while scheduling controls activation and deactivation.

Core includes regular campaigns and testing across unlimited domains. Games require a separate package, which matters when the intended exit offer is a wheel or another reward mechanic. The subscription’s traffic terminology also deserves attention: the review explains how the visitor label relates to the cookie documentation’s session description. Unlimited domains does not mean unlimited audience capacity.

ConvertFlow places an exit popup within a broader funnel. Triggers include exit intent, delay and scroll, while URL and page-history conditions can be combined in groups. The campaign can ask a question, collect contact details and route the visitor toward an outcome rather than end with one generic success message.

Targeting can exclude people who already viewed or completed a campaign. Repeat suppression can use a period after closure, and Broadcasts can prioritise or replace onsite campaigns. Those Broadcasts are scheduling and display controls, not email broadcasts. Conditional actions and skip logic add another layer when different answers need different destinations.

Free is for building and previewing; a live exit campaign needs paid publishing. Advanced conditional routes and scheduling have their own tier requirements. ConvertFlow fits a team designing a structured onsite funnel, but its lowest editor price is not the cost of deploying all of that workflow. Shopify-dependent events also require the relevant store connection.

### Plan to compare

Pro is justified when funnel tests and conditional product recommendations are required. For capture and CRM integrations without those features, Prime is the cheaper option.

[Full scoring details in the review](https://popuppapa.com/reviews/pop-convert/index.md#capability-score)

Pop Convert is a Shopify-focused campaign tool with exit intent, delay, scroll and several store-related triggers. A display can also react when another display is dismissed or submitted. That lets a merchant connect a first invitation with a follow-on campaign rather than run every popup independently.

Audience conditions include login status, customer tags, B2B status, total spend and order count. Frequency options range from once per visitor to intervals, sessions or page loads. These controls support store-specific exit offers, while the form editor and integrations determine what happens after someone responds. Advanced targeting and A/B testing are part of paid access.

Its paid price follows the store’s Shopify plan, so the entry rate for a Basic store is not universal. Free has session and subscriber limits, and the account and public listing currently describe different allowances. The review preserves those distinctions. Pop Convert is therefore most relevant to a merchant choosing an exit campaign inside Shopify, rather than a general website popup subscription.

### Plan to compare

The Shopify Basic tier removes the free plan’s session and subscriber limits. Stores on Grow, Advanced or Plus pay their corresponding app rate.

## Campaigns in practice

Exit campaigns do not all aim for the same result. The examples below cover email capture, product discovery and feedback. Vendor-reported outcomes belong to those specific campaigns and are not forecasts for another website.

### Grafical: an additional invitation after the main offer

Sleeknote reports that Grafical added more than 300 monthly subscribers through exit campaigns alongside its larger newsletter and wheel programme. The exit invitation contributed to a broader acquisition setup; it was not the source of the entire reported subscriber total.

[Grafical exit campaigns](https://sleeknote.com/success-stories/grafical)

### Protein.sk: a reason to continue browsing

YNK media’s Wisepops campaign for Protein.sk used an exit popup to promote new arrivals rather than collect an email. The vendor reports a 3.38% click-through rate from 6,683 displays. The outcome was a visit to product content, illustrating why an exit-popup “conversion” must be defined before comparing results.

[Protein.sk exit campaign](https://wisepops.com/customers/ynk-media)

### Flip: asking about the barrier

OptiMonk’s Flip example asks sales-page visitors why they did not purchase. It is a feedback use of exit timing, not a recovery coupon. The response can reveal an unresolved question or obstacle even when the visitor does not convert during that visit.

<a id="choose"></a>

## How these tools differ

### Desktop exit and mobile exit are different signals

On desktop, a cursor moving toward the browser controls can indicate departure. A phone has no equivalent pointer path. Klaviyo documents quick upward scrolling; OptiMonk also describes tab changes and certain Back-button actions. Browser support and the visitor’s prior interaction affect those signals.

This is why a mobile-friendly popup design is not enough to describe mobile exit behaviour. The trigger and the layout are separate settings. A campaign should be understood according to the actions that make it appear, rather than a universal promise to catch every visitor before leaving.

[Mobile exit signals](https://support.optimonk.com/en/articles/exit-intent-trigger-on-mobile-devices)

### One trigger or several qualifying conditions

OptiMonk combines triggers with OR, and Poptin’s manual rules use the first condition reached. Klaviyo can require all selected timing conditions. An exit rule plus a delay can therefore mean different things in different products.

Requiring engagement before an exit signal narrows the audience. Allowing either signal broadens it. This affects both campaign reporting and the user experience, so two campaigns carrying the same “exit intent” name may reach quite different visitors.

[Klaviyo timing rules](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/4413544555547)

### Closure and conversion should not be the same event

Getsitecontrol has repeat suppression after views, closures or actions. Privy can exclude previous signups, and ConvertFlow distinguishes campaign viewers from conversions or completions. A visitor who dismissed an offer has not made the same choice as someone who submitted it.

Those distinctions determine whether the next visit receives the same offer, a different message or no popup. They also matter when a welcome campaign and an exit campaign share an incentive: the second campaign should have a defined relationship to the first.

### The audience can be more specific than “everyone leaving”

Klaviyo can use recognised subscribers and segments. OptiMonk and Privy add traffic and store conditions, while Sleeknote uses referral, cookie and SiteData context. Pop Convert’s Shopify rules include tags, spend and order count.

The useful difference is the information available at the moment of display. A known customer, a first-time visitor from an ad and someone reading a help article can need different messages. A rule’s existence still depends on the connection or identifying data it uses.

### An exit campaign can collect, explain or redirect

Email incentives are only one use. A message can send someone to a relevant product page, and a survey can ask what prevented a purchase. The form and action controls decide which of these is possible; the exit trigger only decides the timing.

For this reason, the selection uses the popup profile rather than treating every campaign as lead collection. A click, a submitted answer and an email signup are different outcomes. The related guides go deeper into the tools for each job.

[Email signup tools](https://popuppapa.com/best-email-signup-popup-tools/index.md) · [Survey tools](https://popuppapa.com/best-popup-survey-tools/index.md)

### Testing the offer is different from testing the intervention

An A/B test between two popup designs compares messages that both interrupt the visit. A no-popup control, available in OptiMonk, can address a different question: whether the campaign changes the selected outcome compared with leaving that audience alone.

Reporting also needs the right denominator. A click rate uses displayed campaigns, while a site conversion rate may use all visitors. Vendor case studies sometimes use “conversion” for both. The examples above retain the stated result rather than turn every percentage into recovered revenue.

<a id="settings"></a>

## Six controls behind an exit campaign

These settings determine whether exit intent remains a precise campaign rule or becomes a broad catch-all trigger.

1. 01Device signal. Desktop cursor movement and mobile scroll or navigation signals are different behaviours.
2. 02Trigger combination. OR can show a campaign before exit; AND can require engagement first.
3. 03Eligible pages. An exit offer on a product page is different from one on support or account pages.
4. 04Previous response. Closure, signup and other actions should have distinct repeat rules.
5. 05Campaign relationship. A welcome popup and an exit popup need an order or exclusion rule.
6. 06Measured result. Clicks, answers, subscriptions and orders should keep their own definitions.

<a id="faq"></a>

## Common questions

Which exit-intent popup software is best?

Klaviyo leads this filtered popup-profile ranking, followed by Getsitecontrol and OptiMonk. The order compares broader campaign capabilities among tools with confirmed exit intent. It is not a laboratory ranking of exit-detection accuracy, and a store-specific or simpler tool may fit a particular campaign better.

Do exit-intent popups work on mobile?

Some tools interpret mobile behaviour such as rapid upward scrolling, tab changes or Back-button actions. These are not desktop cursor detection. Klaviyo and OptiMonk document mobile signals, with OptiMonk explaining browser and entry-page conditions. Support should be checked for the particular trigger and device.

Can I create a free exit-intent popup?

Some free plans include exit triggers, but this should not be inferred from a free editor alone. OptiMonk’s current Free offer includes its feature set; Klaviyo includes form triggers within its free email limits. Getsitecontrol’s advanced triggers require Pro or Pro Max.

[Compare free popup builders](https://popuppapa.com/best-free-popup-builders/index.md)

Is exit intent the same as cart abandonment?

No. Exit intent is a browsing signal. Cart abandonment involves an unfinished purchase, and a visitor can leave without ever adding an item. Combining exit timing with Shopify cart conditions creates a more specific audience, but the two events remain distinct.

[Compare Shopify popup apps](https://popuppapa.com/best-shopify-popup-apps/index.md)

Can an exit popup ask for feedback instead of an email?

Yes. A survey can ask why someone is leaving or what information was missing. The useful features are the question controls, branching and response destination. The result should be counted as feedback rather than a new marketing subscriber.

[Compare popup survey tools](https://popuppapa.com/best-popup-survey-tools/index.md)

Why does my popup appear before the visitor leaves?

A second trigger may qualify first. OptiMonk uses OR across triggers, and Poptin’s manual rules use the first condition reached. A time-delay rule can therefore open the popup before an exit signal. Other audience and frequency conditions also affect eligibility.

Can I hide the exit popup from existing subscribers?

Tools can use known profile data, list membership, previous submissions or browser-based suppression. Those methods have different coverage. A recognised Klaviyo profile can be excluded, for example, while a visitor using a new browser may not be recognised as the same person.

Do exit-intent apps stop visitors closing the browser?

They display an onsite message when a qualifying signal is detected. They do not guarantee interception of a browser close or every navigation action. The campaign is an invitation while the visitor is still reachable, not control over their browser.
