OptinMonster vs Poptin.
Publishing controls or contact flexibility?

Compare OptinMonster and Poptin across form fields, email validation, tests, games, agency permissions and annual versus monthly popup pricing.

What do you need your website to do next?

OptinMonster and Poptin both serve websites that need targeted capture without moving their existing email platform. They differ in the information a form can collect, how a team manages campaigns, and whether native email becomes part of the purchase.

Poptin combines contact-property controls and email validation with multiple reward formats, subaccounts and a separate Growth email offer. OptinMonster provides site- and folder-scoped user roles, with publishing kept away from Authors, but unlocks several campaign functions through higher paid tiers.

This is especially relevant for agencies. A client login, a billing boundary and permission to publish are different requirements. So are one visitor and one popup impression. The comparison follows those practical distinctions through the feature rounds and workload-specific pricing.

How the comparison works

15 rounds compare both platforms against the same 196 capability criteria, with 100 points distributed across the sections. Each round explains the practical differences and adds to the running score. The table beneath each round shows how the points are awarded. The conclusions bring those results together for different uses of the platforms.

Formats & content

OptinMonster includes floating bars and animated lightboxes, with countdowns and dynamic Smart Tags on Pro. Its operational-notice examples use messages with buttons, a useful format when an update has a destination. Poptin provides popups and embedded forms, with desktop and mobile layouts. Campaign elements can be arranged directly in the visual editor.

Forms

Poptin has the more detailed contact-property and email-validation workflow. OptinMonster’s two-step form is a presentation choice rather than an equivalent set of input checks. OptinMonster connects email capture to an external email provider. Plus adds two-step Yes/No campaigns, letting a visitor express interest before seeing the signup form. The second screen changes the route into the form; it is separate from custom-field mapping, input validation and answer-dependent branching.

Poptin offers name, email, phone, message, location, birthday and email-consent fields. Properties can use radio buttons, single-select controls and hidden values, with custom text, number, date, boolean and multiple-value properties. Email checks include format, typos and business-address rules. Double opt-in can inherit the account setting or be configured for the form.

Surveys

OptinMonster’s two-step Yes/No campaigns start on Plus. A preliminary choice can lead into a signup, but that structure is different from a scored survey or a product quiz with answer-dependent results. Poptin can collect customer answers through form fields. Dedicated feedback ratings and quiz formats are evaluated separately from ordinary signup questions.

Gamification

Poptin provides wheel, gift and scratch interactions. OptinMonster requires Growth for its wheel, so neither the Basic nor selected Pro headline represents the game requirement. OptinMonster places gamified wheels on Growth. That establishes a spin-to-win format at a higher tier than the selected Pro plan. The existence of the wheel does not establish a scratch card, seasonal calendar or the same reward-probability controls as another product.

Poptin provides wheel, gift and scratch formats. Wheel and gift settings include prize labels, coupon codes, relative weights, losing outcomes and redirects. Weights of 2:1:1 displayed as 50%, 25% and 25%. Separate teaser, play, post-play, winning and losing screens give you control over the journey. The scratch setup we used revealed a fixed offer.

Targeting

Both offer targeted campaigns, with paid gates on some controls. OptinMonster’s geolocation requires Growth; Poptin’s advanced-condition access varies by offer. OptinMonster distributes targeting controls across paid tiers. Scheduling and advanced campaign controls are part of Pro, while geolocation requires Growth. This makes the combination of conditions important: a regional promotion with a fixed launch period needs the tier covering both the location and schedule.

Poptin includes delay, exit intent, scroll, page count, click count and inactivity triggers. Manual triggers fire when the first selected condition is met. Device, URL, country, frequency and schedules provide the basic audience controls. JavaScript, Autopilot, previous-page, cookie and other advanced conditions can require a paid plan.

Experiments

Both offer popup A/B tests. OptinMonster starts at Plus; Poptin groups variants from a completed campaign. Additional experimental controls remain separate checks. OptinMonster includes A/B testing from Plus. A team can compare popup designs without buying Growth solely for experiments. Automatic winner selection, adjustable traffic allocation and a no-popup control are separate criteria; the A/B-testing label alone does not establish them.

Poptin creates an A/B variant from a completed campaign and groups the designs in one dashboard test. This is useful for comparing a headline, incentive or layout without managing two unrelated campaigns. The A/B command becomes available after the initial campaign setup.

Email & SMS

Poptin Growth adds native email and automation. OptinMonster uses an external sender, so retaining the same email platform can simplify that part of the comparison. OptinMonster passes captured leads to a connected email platform. That platform owns broadcasts, subscriber segmentation and welcome sequences. The popup subscription and the sending subscription therefore remain separate parts of the budget, even when the integration creates a smooth signup journey.

Poptin Growth combines captured contacts with email campaigns and automations. Its canvas supports a confirmed-subscription trigger, source filters, Yes/No conditions, delays, email actions and contact operations. Retrigger controls help manage repeat entry. The email editor includes columns, text, images, buttons, HTML, coupons and reusable blocks.

Team & sites

OptinMonster explicitly prevents Authors from publishing. Poptin’s Agency subaccounts separate clients and billing; that is not the same permission model. OptinMonster Pro adds Viewer, Author and Manager subaccounts assigned to sites and folders. Authors cannot publish, and access to leads or saved assets can be granted separately. These controls provide a concrete division between drafting a campaign and making it live for visitors.

Poptin exposes users, subaccounts and account- or subaccount-scoped API keys. Its Users screen describes broad editing, deletion and billing access, while seat availability depends on the offer. On Agency, sub-account users cannot open Billing and Plans. Treat the user allowance and the popup-domain allowance as separate plan details.

Developer

OptinMonster Pro includes webhooks for lead delivery. A webhook connects captured data to another workflow; it should not be treated as an interface for an external agent to build or activate campaigns. Poptin’s public API manages contacts and email operations, reads popup analytics, and pauses or resumes existing popups. Keys belong to an account or subaccount and can be revoked. Webhooks forward form submissions to an external endpoint.

Support

Poptin lists chat and email across entry popup plans, with premium support higher up. OptinMonster’s human-support promise does not by itself establish an equivalent live-chat entitlement. OptinMonster advertises human support. The channel, availability and assistance included with a selected subscription should be distinguished from managed campaign work. A support promise is not a guarantee of a particular response time or round-the-clock live chat. Poptin includes chat and email support on Free, Basic and Pro; Growth and Agency add premium support. Support availability follows the product and plan you choose.

Data & reporting

Poptin’s scheduled reporting and reporting API are useful for agency dashboards. OptinMonster’s results should be evaluated against the specific confirmed reporting rows. OptinMonster’s campaign comparison and integration routes support evaluating capture campaigns. A signup total is different from downstream purchase value or email engagement. The scored reporting rows distinguish confirmed analytics and export operations from capabilities that remain unconfirmed; a connector does not establish a native reporting API.

Poptin reports visitors, views and conversions, with email reporting in the email product. Scheduled lead and statistics reports include recipient, subaccount, interval and timezone settings. Its reporting API is useful when you want to bring results into an external dashboard or an agent workflow.

Integrations

Both can feed an external marketing stack. Poptin adds REST access to contacts and reports; OptinMonster’s named connector and multi-provider gates can require Pro. OptinMonster gates integration access by plan. HubSpot, Klaviyo, Zapier, webhooks and delivery to multiple providers are documented on Pro or higher. A simple email-list connection and a workflow sending the same response to several systems can therefore require different subscriptions.

Poptin connects to email and CRM platforms, with Make and Zapier for additional workflows. Slack supports team notifications, and a webhook route can forward submissions. Its REST API offers another route to contacts and reporting. A store can therefore keep its existing email platform rather than moving to Poptin Growth.

Shopify

Poptin has explicit cart and customer targeting plus an Add to cart action. OptinMonster’s general capture features should not be substituted for unconfirmed Shopify operations. Installing a popup on a Shopify storefront is separate from reading its cart, generating a discount or adding a product. OptinMonster’s general lead-generation offer should be evaluated against the specific store operations in the table. Unconfirmed cart and coupon capabilities do not become supported merely because a campaign can appear on a store.

Poptin has a native Shopify app. Cart item count, cart value, specific products, customer tags and login status can shape the audience. Order-history targeting requires an upgrade. Shopify cart triggers and post-purchase automations can start the next interaction. Popup buttons offer Add to cart. Coupon setup supports fixed codes and imported unique-code lists, including CSV and fallback codes. These controls suit targeted capture and straightforward cart offers.

Pricing

Poptin’s monthly popup plans count visitors; OptinMonster’s annual offer counts impressions and renews at a higher price. Poptin Growth introduces a third, contact-based buying route. OptinMonster Pro is advertised at a first-year equivalent of $37 per month, billed annually, for 25,000 campaign impressions and three sites. Renewal is $870 per year, or $72.50 per month on an equivalent basis. Growth is a higher tier for geolocation and wheels; Plus can cover simpler A/B-tested capture campaigns.

Poptin’s monthly popup plans are Basic at $25 for 10,000 visitors and one domain, Pro at $59 for 50,000 visitors and four domains, and Agency at $119 for 150,000 visitors and unlimited domains. Growth uses a separate contact-and-email model: the $19 bracket covers 500 contacts and 5,000 visitors, with unlimited emails and domains. Visitor allowances count visitors to installed pages, not just popup viewers.

What matters most to you?

Let’s put your priorities first

First, check that each tool can do the task. An absent or unconfirmed required capability means a dash with an explanation instead of a scenario score, and no winner highlight. Only qualifying tools share the points; a sole qualifier earns the full weight of each criterion it meets. 70 points go to the criteria directly related to it, and 30 to everything else. For “Popups without email marketing”, all 100 points go to the included capabilities and relevant popup pricing scenarios; unwanted features and email sending have zero weight. Both tools earn points for confirmed capabilities; unconfirmed ones earn zero. The first row keeps the original overall score.

How the comparison works

These scores are relative to OptinMonster and Poptin in this comparison. They cannot be carried over to comparisons with other products: each tool’s points depend on what the other participant offers.

  1. Relative scores, not universal ratings

The same capability earns half the points when both tools have it, and all the points when only one does. Changing the opponent can therefore change a product’s score without changing the product itself. The review pages separately show absolute capability ratings without price.

  2. One shared pool of 100 points

The 15 rounds cover 196 criteria. Each round has a set weight, divided equally among its criteria. These weights are our editorial choices.

  3. How features earn points

If both products meet a criterion, they split its points equally. If only one does, it earns all of them. An unconfirmed capability earns zero. If neither qualifies, those points are not awarded, so the two totals can add up to less than 100.

  4. How prices earn points

Ten scenarios carry 1 point each. We use the cheapest confirmed plan meeting each scenario’s traffic and feature requirements, billed monthly in USD. Equal prices split the point; a plan costing half as much earns twice the share. A free qualifying plan beats a paid one. If only one suitable plan and price are confirmed, it earns the full point.

  5. Which plans count

Feature rounds cover capabilities across the products’ plans. The total does not describe a single subscription; the pricing scenarios identify the plan needed for each stated use case.

  6. How your priorities change the score

A tool must first meet the task’s required capabilities. If a requirement is absent or unconfirmed, its scenario score is shown as a dash and it cannot be the winner; the status explains why. Only qualifying tools participate in point allocation and price comparisons. A sole qualifying tool earns the full weight of each criterion it meets; criteria it does not meet remain unearned. Standard priorities assign 70 points to their relevant criteria and 30 to the rest, preserving relative weights within each group. “Popups without email marketing” instead distributes all 100 points among its included criteria, preserving their relative weights and giving everything else zero. It includes lead capture, testing, reporting and external handoff. Its pricing criteria exclude email sending and feedback workloads. Included email features carry no penalty: only the required plan price counts. The evidence and scoring rules stay the same. The overall-feature row keeps the original weights.
