Privy vs OptiMonk.
Store follow-up or onsite testing?

Privy vs OptiMonk: compare Shopify capture, recommendations, popup games, experiments, email follow-up and the difference between contact and pageview pricing.

What do you need your website to do next?

Privy and OptiMonk both help an online store turn a visit into a signup or purchase. Privy combines displays with native email and SMS. OptiMonk concentrates on onsite campaigns, recommendations and experiments connected to a separate marketing stack.

For a store already committed to an email platform, OptiMonk can add a dedicated onsite layer. For a team that wants capture and follow-up in one product, Privy’s combined package deserves attention. The same popup design can therefore sit inside two very different operating models.

The feature comparison also goes beyond email. Privy’s customer and product synchronisation, OptiMonk’s no-popup control and recommendation options, and their different game libraries change the campaigns a team can run. Prices follow different counters depending on which Privy package is selected.

How the comparison works

15 rounds compare both platforms against the same 196 capability criteria, with 100 points distributed across the sections. Each round explains the practical differences and adds to the running score. The table beneath each round shows how the points are awarded. The conclusions bring those results together for different uses of the platforms.

Formats & content

Privy uses onsite displays to capture subscribers and present offers. The table separates individual display formats and content controls from the email workflows that follow a signup. OptiMonk generates campaign designs from a brief and offers desktop and mobile views. Notices, form content and display elements can then be revised for the intended campaign.

Forms

Privy combines subscriber hygiene and preference collection with its own contact records. OptiMonk focuses on configurable capture and a mapped handoff to the existing stack. Privy collects email, phone, text, date, radio, dropdown and checkbox fields, with separate email and text opt-in fields. Hidden attributes record UTM values or custom data, and Mini Quiz steps store a preference answer on the contact. Double opt-in, one-signup-per-contact rules and invisible reCAPTCHA protect the list.

OptiMonk collects email, name, phone, radio choices, checkbox-group answers and comments. Required-field settings and button destinations control the submission journey. Its AI builder can generate a multi-step form, while field mapping carries answers into a connected marketing service. Separate screens organise the questions but do not by themselves establish answer-driven branching.

Gamification

Privy provides a configurable wheel. OptiMonk offers a wider set of reward formats, with different probability mechanics for wheels and scratch cards. Privy’s Spin to Win sets a label, coupon, win ratio and result text for each slice, and slices can be winning or losing. The wheel can sit behind an email step, with desktop and mobile tabs to reopen it.

OptiMonk provides a wheel and scratch-card controls in its AI builder. Wheel odds are calculated across winning slices, and a slice with an empty coupon code is a losing slice. Scratch settings allow up to four weighted prize rows, with designed, solid or gradient covers; the planner describes a prize on every play. Our 2:1 scratch weights produced 66.7% and 33.3%. Its wider documentation also lists a gift format.

Targeting

Both coordinate messages around visitor behaviour. OptiMonk adds explicit campaign priority; Privy’s conditions can react to other displays and store-specific customer context. Privy opens displays on page load, after a delay, at a scroll depth or on exit intent. Audience rules combine current, initial and referring URLs, country, region or postal code, device, sessions and pageviews with AND/OR logic. Frequency settings, signup limits, schedules by date, weekday and time, and rules based on other displays keep campaigns apart.

OptiMonk combines delay, exit intent, scroll, inactivity, click and custom-event triggers with country, visitor history, referral, UTM, cookies and subscriber conditions. Campaign priority and previous-exposure rules coordinate several messages. AI-assisted settings changes provide another way to edit timing and audience conditions without rebuilding the campaign.

Experiments

OptiMonk’s no-popup control and winner rules make the difference for incrementality testing. Privy compares display variations and reports the leading version. Privy runs display experiments with a set traffic allocation, stopped after a number of days or participants, and marks the variation with the highest conversion rate.

OptiMonk adds a no-popup control alongside a design, and traffic splits evenly between versions; a custom split is not available. Automatic winner settings include a 95% chance-to-win threshold, at least 200 conversions and three days. This gives an optimization team more explicit controls over the comparison and stopping rule.

Email & SMS

Privy includes native campaigns and flows in its messaging offer. OptiMonk leaves that work with the connected email or SMS service. Privy’s Email + SMS plan adds campaigns, segments and flows for welcome, cart, checkout, browse, purchase, winback and back-in-stock journeys, with Yes/No splits, delays and contact updates. Sends are unlimited; the price follows mailable contacts, with 250 SMS credits a month included.

OptiMonk’s connection routes let you pass captured contacts to a dedicated email or SMS platform. For a store already using Klaviyo, Mailchimp or another provider, this keeps follow-up in the system that owns customer journeys and reporting. Budget for that provider alongside OptiMonk.

Team & sites

Both distinguish account administration from campaign work. Privy’s subaccount arrangement and OptiMonk’s domain allowance should be assessed separately from user roles. Privy accounts have Owner and Member roles, and an event history records who did what. Subaccounts let one login manage several stores or brands under one bill, sharing the parent account’s traffic allowance. OptiMonk invitations distinguish Member and Owner. Subscription, billing and usage management belong to the Owner role. That is a practical separation when one person manages campaigns and another controls the subscription.

Developer

Privy’s API manages contacts and ingests order and custom events, but has no display or campaign endpoints. Browser events identify shoppers and update carts. Webhooks deliver signup and order events, while MCP provides account and performance data. OptiMonk’s REST API and MCP server create and edit campaigns with scoped access. MCP can also change delivery settings and publish. These builder interfaces do not read leads or analytics; a webhook sends subscriber details to a callback URL.

Both offer direct help. OptiMonk’s higher plans add account management; that is a different purchase from Privy’s ordinary product-support channels. Privy lists email and live chat support on its plans. OptiMonk includes live chat on Free, while Premium and Master add an account manager. Data & reporting

Both connect campaigns with store outcomes. Privy emphasises signup-attributed orders and messaging; OptiMonk supports different onsite goals and experimental comparisons. Privy reports display views, signups, orders and revenue attributed to signups, and emails a summary each morning or each Monday. Contacts and a display’s signups export to CSV.

OptiMonk supports Submit and Order goals alongside page visits, purchase value and add-to-cart value. Its subscriber area stores submitted contacts, with CSV and XLSX export. Commerce goals connect onsite campaigns with later store activity, rather than treating every button click as the same result.

Integrations

Privy can hand off contacts despite having its own sender. OptiMonk’s connections are central to completing the follow-up journey in another platform. Privy sends contacts to email and SMS platforms including Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Attentive and Postscript, and to Facebook Custom Audiences. It connects to Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, WooCommerce and Squarespace stores, review and loyalty apps, Google Analytics, Slack and custom webhooks. A Zapier app is available by invitation.

OptiMonk’s provider menu includes Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Attentive, Postscript, Salesforce, Slack, Zapier and Webhook. Its own subscriber list stores campaign responses. Email and SMS connectors make it a natural capture layer for a store that already has a lifecycle-marketing stack.

Shopify

Both support discounts and cart actions. OptiMonk has the clearer recommendation-led angle, while Privy links onsite displays with synchronised customer data and native store flows. Privy’s Shopify app syncs products, collections and customers in both directions, tagging new signups. Displays target cart value, products and order count, and store events start flows. Coupons are created as master or unique Shopify codes and can be applied to the cart after signup. Cross Sell displays add a product to the cart from a button.

OptiMonk also has a native Shopify app. Cart conditions combine value, product count and specific products with AND logic. Its product features cover manually selected products, most-viewed and recently visited items, cart contents and smart recommendations. Shopify coupon support includes unique single-use codes, expiry settings and automatic application; wheel and scratch-card prizes use existing codes. Together these features support recommendation-led offers as well as signup incentives.

No confirmed plan combines popups, newsletters and email automation in one platform. A popup subscription plus an external email service does not meet this requirement.

The final score

Privy is a strong option for a store wanting capture, customer context and native messaging together. OptiMonk is more compelling when the existing email stack stays in place and the investment is in onsite recommendations, AI-assisted creation or more controlled experiments. Include both the popup and sender costs when choosing the connected approach.

What matters most to you?

Let’s put your priorities first

First, check that each tool can do the task. An absent or unconfirmed required capability means a dash with an explanation instead of a scenario score, and no winner highlight. Only qualifying tools share the points; a sole qualifier earns the full weight of each criterion it meets. 70 points go to the criteria directly related to it, and 30 to everything else. For “Popups without email marketing”, all 100 points go to the included capabilities and relevant popup pricing scenarios; unwanted features and email sending have zero weight. Both tools earn points for confirmed capabilities; unconfirmed ones earn zero. The first row keeps the original overall score.

How the comparison works

These scores are relative to Privy and OptiMonk in this comparison. They cannot be carried over to comparisons with other products: each tool’s points depend on what the other participant offers.

  1. Relative scores, not universal ratings

The same capability earns half the points when both tools have it, and all the points when only one does. Changing the opponent can therefore change a product’s score without changing the product itself. The review pages separately show absolute capability ratings without price.

  2. One shared pool of 100 points

The 15 rounds cover 196 criteria. Each round has a set weight, divided equally among its criteria. These weights are our editorial choices.

  3. How features earn points

If both products meet a criterion, they split its points equally. If only one does, it earns all of them. An unconfirmed capability earns zero. If neither qualifies, those points are not awarded, so the two totals can add up to less than 100.

  4. How prices earn points

Ten scenarios carry 1 point each. We use the cheapest confirmed plan meeting each scenario’s traffic and feature requirements, billed monthly in USD. Equal prices split the point; a plan costing half as much earns twice the share. A free qualifying plan beats a paid one. If only one suitable plan and price are confirmed, it earns the full point.

  5. Which plans count

Feature rounds cover capabilities across the products’ plans. The total does not describe a single subscription; the pricing scenarios identify the plan needed for each stated use case.

  6. How your priorities change the score

A tool must first meet the task’s required capabilities. If a requirement is absent or unconfirmed, its scenario score is shown as a dash and it cannot be the winner; the status explains why. Only qualifying tools participate in point allocation and price comparisons. A sole qualifying tool earns the full weight of each criterion it meets; criteria it does not meet remain unearned. Standard priorities assign 70 points to their relevant criteria and 30 to the rest, preserving relative weights within each group. “Popups without email marketing” instead distributes all 100 points among its included criteria, preserving their relative weights and giving everything else zero. It includes lead capture, testing, reporting and external handoff. Its pricing criteria exclude email sending and feedback workloads. Included email features carry no penalty: only the required plan price counts. The evidence and scoring rules stay the same. The overall-feature row keeps the original weights.
