Promolayer vs OptiMonk.
Which coupon earns its discount?
Compare two Shopify popup tools with no-popup controls, different wheel rewards and very different billing for a narrowly targeted promotion.
What do you need your website to do next?
A shop sells a full-price accessory with a discounted main item. A campaign that gives every entrant a code can appear successful because many buyers redeem one. The useful comparison is what happens to the same eligible audience when it sees no incentive.
Both tools have a documented no-popup control. Their wheel rewards deserve a closer look. We generated a short-lived Shopify discount in Promolayer. OptiMonk’s saved wheel evidence describes existing codes and weights across winning slices. Its unique-code route in a regular campaign is a separate capability.
How the comparison works
15 rounds compare both platforms against the same 196 capability criteria, with 100 points distributed across the sections. Each round explains the practical differences and adds to the running score. The table beneath each round shows how the points are awarded. The conclusions bring those results together for different uses of the platforms.
Formats & content
A wheel can retreat to a teaser after dismissal. A deadline or floating bar gives the store a smaller way to present an offer on a subsequent page. OptiMonk generates campaign designs from a brief and offers desktop and mobile views. Notices, form content and display elements can then be revised for the intended campaign.

Forms
The standard form has space for two custom fields alongside contact details. A dropdown and a text answer fit together on one screen. An email reply or a thank-you view follows submission. OptiMonk collects email, name, phone, radio choices, checkbox-group answers and comments. Required-field settings and button destinations control the submission journey. Its AI builder can generate a multi-step form, while field mapping carries answers into a connected marketing service. Separate screens organise the questions but do not by themselves establish answer-driven branching.

Surveys
Use a dropdown for the reason for a visit and a text field for the shopper’s explanation. Reporting a satisfaction index or assigning a quiz outcome would require more than these two inputs. OptiMonk supports multi-step product quizzes. Quiz support is assessed separately from NPS, star and other dedicated rating formats.

Gamification
Specify whether the shopper can actually lose. Promolayer offers a no-reward outcome. In the documented OptiMonk wheel, an empty code receives no winning chance. A segment that looks blank on the artwork is an unreliable way to promise a losing outcome.
The wheel assigns odds and an outcome to each slice, including a losing slice. A merchant can distinguish a fixed code created in Shopify from a new discount generated for the winner. OptiMonk provides a wheel and scratch-card controls in its AI builder. Wheel odds are calculated across winning slices, and a slice with an empty coupon code is a losing slice. Scratch settings allow up to four weighted prize rows, with designed, solid or gradient covers; the planner describes a prize on every play. Our 2:1 scratch weights produced 66.7% and 33.3%. Its wider documentation also lists a gift format.

Targeting
A cart addition can trigger a campaign. Item, cart value and customer-tag conditions help reserve the offer for shoppers who qualify. URL rules then narrow where they see it. OptiMonk combines delay, exit intent, scroll, inactivity, click and custom-event triggers with country, visitor history, referral, UTM, cookies and subscriber conditions. Campaign priority and previous-exposure rules coordinate several messages. AI-assisted settings changes provide another way to edit timing and audience conditions without rebuilding the campaign.

Experiments
Keep the audience and price constant while reserving a group that sees nothing. Compare order margin as well as redemptions, particularly if the item is already on sale. Basic supports variants and a group that sees no popup. Keep that group when the decision concerns paying for the discount itself.
OptiMonk adds a no-popup control alongside a design, and traffic splits evenly between versions; a custom split is not available. Automatic winner settings include a 95% chance-to-win threshold, at least 200 conversions and three days. This gives an optimization team more explicit controls over the comparison and stopping rule.

Email & SMS
Paid follow-up can deliver a signup incentive and later messages. Check who owns the welcome email when a connected provider also receives the subscriber. OptiMonk’s connection routes let you pass captured contacts to a dedicated email or SMS platform. For a store already using Klaviyo, Mailchimp or another provider, this keeps follow-up in the system that owns customer journeys and reporting. Budget for that provider alongside OptiMonk.

Team & sites
Professional includes two workspaces, while inviting collaborators by email starts on Plus. A second workspace and a separate client login are different purchasing decisions. OptiMonk invitations distinguish Member and Owner. Subscription, billing and usage management belong to the Owner role. That is a practical separation when one person manages campaigns and another controls the subscription.

Developer
A developer can trigger an existing popup from JavaScript and receive form submissions by webhook. Those operations establish storefront control and outbound data delivery. OptiMonk’s REST API and MCP server create and edit campaigns with scoped access. MCP can also change delivery settings and publish. These builder interfaces do not read leads or analytics; a webhook sends subscriber details to a callback URL.

Support
Email support is listed across the Shopify plans. Live chat starts at Enterprise, so include the support tier in the budget for a time-sensitive launch. OptiMonk includes live chat on Free, while Premium and Master add an account manager. An account manager provides a different level of assistance from access to chat and can matter for teams running a larger optimization program.

Editor & workflow
A merchant can save a draft and preview it before switching it live. Use a restricted storefront URL for reward testing because the editor preview skips coupon creation. OptiMonk opens its editor on Free and saves inactive drafts. Chat and Visual modes support revisions, with Undo, Redo and Saved versions. The in-app assistant generates concepts and changes designs and display settings.

Data & reporting
Export contacts from a list to investigate the records behind signup totals. For a coupon promotion, reconcile redeemed codes and discount amounts with the store. OptiMonk supports Submit and Order goals alongside page visits, purchase value and add-to-cart value. Its subscriber area stores submitted contacts, with CSV and XLSX export. Commerce goals connect onsite campaigns with later store activity, rather than treating every button click as the same result.

Integrations
Choose Shopify customer creation, creation with marketing subscription or no Shopify update. Mailchimp, Klaviyo and the webhook have separate controls in the form actions. OptiMonk’s provider menu includes Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Attentive, Postscript, Salesforce, Slack, Zapier and Webhook. Its own subscriber list stores campaign responses. Email and SMS connectors make it a natural capture layer for a store that already has a lifecycle-marketing stack.
| Integrations | Promolayer | OptiMonk |
|---|---|---|
| +0.13 Mailchimp: Connect a Mailchimp account and choose the audience that receives new form submissions. Apply tags for the signup source. Confirm the subscriber’s status before using the tag to start a welcome email. Klaviyo: Authorize Klaviyo with the required keys and choose the subscriber list for the form. Check list membership before relying on a list-triggered welcome flow. | +0.13 Brevo, Selzy, Maileon, Mailigen, MailWizz, Listamester, Omnisend, The Marketer, WebGalamb: Connect the provider account, select a list and map signup fields to the destination. Some connectors retain older service names in the picker, including Sendinblue for Brevo. CleverReach: Authorize the CleverReach account, choose a recipient group and map the form fields. OptiMonk offers a double opt-in mode that requires selecting a confirmation form. A new recipient can therefore be present but inactive until they click the email. CM Commerce: Select CM Commerce (Conversio) on the campaign, supply the CM Commerce API key and choose a list. Map popup inputs and add fixed field values where useful. The list and mapping can be edited for an individual campaign without removing the account connection. SendGrid: Select SendGrid in the OptiMonk campaign’s integration settings and supply the SendGrid API key. The guide describes adding form subscribers to the mailing list but gives no field-by-field mapping. Confirm any extra attributes inside Marketing Contacts. AWeber: Authorize AWeber in the OptiMonk campaign, choose a list and match the campaign inputs to field identifiers from that list. The mapping options depend on both the form and the selected list. Create the destination field before building a signup around a reader’s preference. Campaign Monitor: Enter the Campaign Monitor API key, test the connection and choose the mailing list in the OptiMonk campaign. To identify form signups, the vendor describes creating a source custom field on the Campaign Monitor list, refreshing the field choices in OptiMonk and selecting it. GetResponse: Connect GetResponse with an API key in the campaign, select the receiving list and map the popup inputs. A static field lets the merchant send a fixed campaign identifier alongside each address. You can change the list for one campaign while keeping the account connection. Klaviyo: Connect Klaviyo, choose a list and map the signup fields. Collected answers follow that mapping; segmentation and follow-up stay in Klaviyo. Mailchimp: Connect Mailchimp, choose a list and map the signup fields. Collected answers follow that mapping; segmentation and follow-up stay in Mailchimp. | |
| SMS | — | +0.25 Attentive, Postscript: Send captured contacts to SMS marketing platforms. |
| CRM | — | +0.25 MiniCRM, SalesAutopilot: Send new subscribers to the selected destination; provider-specific settings apply. Keap: Connect Keap to the OptiMonk campaign, choose tags that already exist in Keap and map form inputs to contact fields. You can send fixed fields too. Configure the follow-up in Keap using the tag or value the form actually supplies. Ontraport: Use an Ontraport App ID and API key with permission to add contacts. Choose an optional tag in the OptiMonk campaign; if you create the tag in Ontraport, refresh the choices before saving. Submissions add contacts with the selected tag. Salesforce: Connect Salesforce in the campaign and choose the receiving record type. Email maps to the CRM email field; review the suggested mappings for other inputs or leave an input out. A static source value can identify every record submitted by this campaign. HubSpot: Connect HubSpot, choose a list and map the signup fields. Collected answers follow that mapping; segmentation and follow-up stay in HubSpot. |

Pricing
OptiMonk counts site pageviews even when a visitor never qualifies. Promolayer counts popup impressions. A content-heavy store displaying a reward only after cart addition should price both traffic figures. Shopify plans count popup impressions across the account. At monthly rates Basic covers 15,000 for $25 and adds unbranded display, experiments and follow-up email.
OptiMonk bills pageviews. Free covers 10,000 pageviews and one domain; Essential, Growth and Premium cover 20,000, 100,000 and 500,000 pageviews. Our account’s monthly prices were $29, $99 and $249. Published annual equivalents were $19, $69 and $179 per month, requiring annual payments of $228, $828 and $2,148. Targeting, A/B testing, integrations and unbranded popups are included even on Free. AI credits and domains also have plan limits.

What matters most to you?
Let’s put your priorities first
First, check that each tool can do the task. An absent or unconfirmed required capability means a dash with an explanation instead of a scenario score, and no winner highlight. Only qualifying tools share the points; a sole qualifier earns the full weight of each criterion it meets. 70 points go to the criteria directly related to it, and 30 to everything else. For “Popups without email marketing”, all 100 points go to the included capabilities and relevant popup pricing scenarios; unwanted features and email sending have zero weight. Both tools earn points for confirmed capabilities; unconfirmed ones earn zero. The first row keeps the original overall score.

How the comparison works
These scores are relative to Promolayer and OptiMonk in this comparison. They cannot be carried over to comparisons with other products: each tool’s points depend on what the other participant offers.
Relative scores, not universal ratings
The same capability earns half the points when both tools have it, and all the points when only one does. Changing the opponent can therefore change a product’s score without changing the product itself. The review pages separately show absolute capability ratings without price.
One shared pool of 100 points
The 15 rounds cover 196 criteria. Each round has a set weight, divided equally among its criteria. These weights are our editorial choices.
How features earn points
If both products meet a criterion, they split its points equally. If only one does, it earns all of them. An unconfirmed capability earns zero. If neither qualifies, those points are not awarded, so the two totals can add up to less than 100.
How prices earn points
Ten scenarios carry 1 point each. We use the cheapest confirmed plan meeting each scenario’s traffic and feature requirements, billed monthly in USD. Equal prices split the point; a plan costing half as much earns twice the share. A free qualifying plan beats a paid one. If only one suitable plan and price are confirmed, it earns the full point.
Which plans count
Feature rounds cover capabilities across the products’ plans. The total does not describe a single subscription; the pricing scenarios identify the plan needed for each stated use case.
How your priorities change the score
A tool must first meet the task’s required capabilities. If a requirement is absent or unconfirmed, its scenario score is shown as a dash and it cannot be the winner; the status explains why. Only qualifying tools participate in point allocation and price comparisons. A sole qualifying tool earns the full weight of each criterion it meets; criteria it does not meet remain unearned. Standard priorities assign 70 points to their relevant criteria and 30 to the rest, preserving relative weights within each group. “Popups without email marketing” instead distributes all 100 points among its included criteria, preserving their relative weights and giving everything else zero. It includes lead capture, testing, reporting and external handoff. Its pricing criteria exclude email sending and feedback workloads. Included email features carry no penalty: only the required plan price counts. The evidence and scoring rules stay the same. The overall-feature row keeps the original weights.
