Alternatives to Promolayer

Compare Promolayer alternatives for cart discounts, multi-step signup, prize campaigns, no-popup holdouts and client access. See which features justify a switch.

Why are you switching from Promolayer?

Open the rules on your busiest Promolayer display. A wheel offered to almost everyone is relatively easy to reproduce. An offer reserved for a particular cart, issuing a short-lived code and keeping part of the audience out of the experiment, gives you three separate things to replace. A new editor can match the design while changing who gets the discount or how you measure it.

Start with the thing that prompted the search. If customers are receiving the wrong offer, compare the Shopify actions first. If the store wants both an email and a phone number, compare form steps. If a new agency client needs a login, price that login before spending a day rebuilding the wheel.

What Promolayer gets right and where it falls short

Promolayer has a useful combination for a Shopify merchant with a small eligible audience. The rules can use a cart addition, a particular item or customer tags. The wheel can issue a fresh code with an expiry. In our Free-plan test a generated 10% reward brought a €72 item down to €64.80 in the cart without the shopper typing the code. That last step is worth preserving when many of your buyers are on phones.

The billing unit also suits a selective campaign. A heavily visited editorial section need not consume the same allowance as a popup shown there on every visit. Basic adds unbranded displays, follow-up email and the ability to compare a promotion against showing nothing. If your last campaign paid for itself on that evidence, keep its audience rules and baseline report for the migration trial.

The standard form gives you two custom fields. That can cover a store location and a preference, but a wholesale enquiry with several dependent questions is a different brief. Teams face another limit: a second workspace and the right to invite a client arrive on different plans.

Promolayer alternatives by reason for switching

Each group uses the directory score out of 100 for that particular job. The first row gives you Promolayer as a reference. A lower-scoring tool can still be the best choice when it solves the particular problem behind the move.

Keep a Shopify promotion working from cart rule to redemption

Write down the promise in terms a shopper would recognise. Is it “save 10% on this order,” “add the matching accessory” or “receive a reward by email”? For the first, compare the cart total after the campaign. For the second, inspect the item and variant actually added. For the third, close the browser before reaching the thank-you screen and inspect what the sender has to work with.

Privy is the closest of these three when both the cart and the next message belong to the marketing team. Personizely is a stronger trial if the choice of merchandise matters more than the next email. SmashPops deserves a place when the shopper must earn the offer and the merchant needs to police repeat entries.

Collect a usable subscriber when the form needs more than two extra fields

A phone number, a wholesale enquiry and a marketing opt-in have three different owners. Ask the salesperson which answers are needed before contacting the buyer. Ask the email team which single answer it uses to select the welcome message. Put everything else after the first commitment.

WooHoo separates email and phone capture into successive screens. Poptin attracts a different buyer: one spending time removing unsuitable addresses before sending the leads to sales. Privy makes sense if separate email and text permissions need to live next to the campaigns that use them. Try the visitor who provides an email and refuses to give a number.

Keep a fair comparison when the offer, the audience or the merchandise changes

Promolayer’s holdout can tell a store whether any popup is better than the ordinary experience. Losing that group matters more than losing a template if the trial is meant to decide whether to fund a discount. Two versions both offering a code cannot tell finance what full-price shoppers would have spent.

OptiMonk is the closest trial for retaining an unexposed group. WooHoo is a reasonable lower-entry option for the narrower question of which form converts more often. Personizely changes the scope of the experiment if the merchandising team wants to vary a product experience. Its widget split tests require Premium; budget for the trial you plan to run.

Give returning visitors a different campaign without crowding the storefront

A visitor who dismissed an email invitation yesterday may welcome a scratch ticket today. A visitor who already won yesterday may reasonably expect the original code still to work. Distinguish suppression of a display from the right to a second reward before selecting the campaign format.

SmashPops lets the operator set both repeat display and repeat participation. WooHoo gives a designer a bar, slide-in, full screen or multi-step campaign to try on different devices. OptiMonk becomes interesting when several promotions compete for the same visitor and the merchandising offer depends on what that person has seen.

Put the welcome message and later campaigns in the right account

Promolayer can send a paid follow-up, but the person responsible for a weekly newsletter may already use a different sender. Count how many messages follow a signup over a month. The first coupon email is a small part of a retention program with segments, regular sends and activity-triggered follow-up.

Klaviyo fits a profile-led program that uses properties and orders long after signup. Privy combines storefront promotion with native email and SMS. WooHoo fits a store that mostly wants to keep its existing email destination and control the separate reward step. Price the sender as well as the acquisition tool when comparing the last option.

Separate client responsibility, site access and the right to publish

A second site belonging to your own brand is a lighter requirement than a client login. Promolayer Professional supplies two workspaces, while workspace invitations start on Plus. A team moving because of that distinction should trial the account handover before recreating the designs.

Poptin is worth comparing for client subaccounts and scoped reporting. Personizely belongs on the list when someone must operate a running widget with limited credentials. OptiMonk suits a team managing related domains, provided the plan includes the domain count and access boundaries needed. Give the client a concrete task, such as finding last month’s figures without seeing another brand.

Promolayer alternatives ranked by overall rating

These overall scores cover the whole toolkit. Read the profile of any contender you would consider moving to.

Klaviyo · 68.56

Papa’s take

If every Promolayer signup already goes into Klaviyo, I’d try a native form on one list before moving a subscriber or rebuilding a flow.

Klaviyo offers forms backed by the same profiles that drive segments, email and SMS. Keep the old welcome flow in place while testing which list and properties the new form writes. That isolates the part you are changing.

A small eligible audience can still feed a large stored list. Active profiles and channel usage help determine the bill even when the new form reaches relatively few visitors.

Privy · 65.93

Papa’s take

I’d start here if the brief says the next message must know what happened in the cart. Rebuild the actual offer, then follow one customer through to the first email.

Privy can give a shopper a direct product or discount action and use store data in the follow-up. That can save a handoff between tools. The popup-only offer and Email + SMS buy different capabilities, so a quote for one cannot stand in for the other.

An existing Promolayer subscriber may already have entered your welcome series. Import the permission and the existing membership deliberately. Adding the person to a fresh list simply to test the new form can make the welcome offer look new a second time.

OptiMonk · 60.42

Papa’s take

I’d choose this trial when someone will genuinely stop giving a discount if the no-offer group performs as well. That decision gives the holdout a purpose.

OptiMonk combines experimentation with product recommendations and targeted onsite actions. Its wheel evidence distinguishes existing codes on winning slices from unique codes in other campaigns. Recreate the exact reward if your current wheel includes losing outcomes.

Every site pageview counts toward capacity, including visits with no campaign display. Forecast the cost of the blog and help centre as well as revenue-producing pages before moving a selective Promolayer offer.

Poptin · 58.03

Papa’s take

I’d ask the client manager to retrieve a private report and sales to try the form with a questionable address. Those two checks tell you more than rebuilding the whole popup.

Poptin is a candidate for business-address qualification, client subaccounts and scoped reporting. Those strengths can justify moving a modest campaign even if the current form looks fine.

Price the product family you will actually use. A popup-only account, a Growth account with sending, and an Agency setup for separate clients have different limits and solve different problems.

Personizely · 49.95

Papa’s take

I’d put two variants in the test catalogue. If the promoted size is sold out, does the new experience leave the customer with a sensible next step?

Personizely is a good alternative when product selection is the hard part. A widget can refer to an actual item or variant and the operator can measure a cart addition separately from a checkout start. A sale still depends on what happens after those events.

A team buying primarily for experiments should quote Premium for widget testing. Compare that cost with the value of improving the merchandise selection, separately from what it currently pays for the popup.

WooHoo · 38.86

Papa’s take

I’d keep the reward constant and vary only the step asking for a phone number. Then look at email-only signups alongside people who finished the whole form.

WooHoo’s three-step signup makes it easier to separate contact requests and the offer reveal. We created a draft A/B test with a duplicated challenger on the free Shopify plan. The two campaigns could be edited independently before either was published.

WooHoo counts eligible visitors. A shortlist based on identical monthly impression numbers can therefore misprice a store with many repeat page visits. Estimate the actual eligible people before comparing it with Promolayer Basic.

SmashPops · 34.41

Papa’s take

I’d let one person try two different games with the same email. That’s the easiest way to decide whether an account-wide entry rule is an advantage or an unintended punishment.

SmashPops trades a broad campaign toolkit for a choice of six game formats. Our scratch ticket revealed its configured code and refused a second entry from the same address. The merchant can also choose to allow duplicates for a different promotion.

Check existing codes before copying the design: a prize label is only text until its code is configured. For an email-delivered reward, identify the game tag, coupon property and sender that will remain available to support after launch.

Five switching decisions in practice

1. The shopper already has the accessory in the basket

Start with one unit of the promoted variant, then act on the offer. Record the item, quantity, discount and subtotal. A button click that adds a second unit can look like a successful conversion until somebody checks the order.

Compare the same action on a phone, where a cart drawer may hide the result. Let the customer see what changed before asking for another click.

2. A winner returns after the promotion has changed

Keep yesterday’s winning email and code. Try the new game with that address. A one-entry-per-game policy and a one-entry-across-games policy give different answers even though the email and coupon remain the same.

Tell support whether the shopper is entitled to a new entry, still entitled to redeem the old code, or both. A message saying “already used” should describe the entry if the discount itself remains valid.

3. The phone screen loses half the applicants

Track accepted email submissions and completed phone steps separately. A visitor declining SMS can still be a valuable email subscriber. Decide whether the reward depends on finishing both steps before writing the invitation.

Try closing the page after step one. Check the record and the promised message rather than assuming the final screen defines the moment of capture.

4. A successful coupon appears to reduce profit

Compare margin per eligible visitor in the exposed and unexposed groups. Count the discount on orders the merchant may have received at full price, as well as additional orders.

Keep the same products and dates for both groups. If a stock clearance starts halfway through the experiment, record it before naming a winner.

5. A client must pause a Friday promotion

Give a test client the minimum permissions and ask them to locate the right site, view its figures and stop the offer. Then open the second client’s report using that same account.

Write down who can restart the campaign on Monday. An agency can solve emergency access and inadvertently give a client control over another store.

What would switching from Promolayer cost?

Take an ordinary month and a sale month. Count distinct visitors, total pageviews and actual displays. Use the same periods for both tools and include the sender if the welcome email moves with the form.

Count the offers that actually appear

For example, 10,000 eligible visitors who each see two offers create 20,000 impressions. That exceeds Promolayer Basic’s 15,000. A store with the same 10,000 visitors showing a single offer to one in five uses only 2,000 impressions. Those two stores need separate quotes.

Run a sale or promotion

Promote a sale with a popup linking to an offer or displaying a fixed coupon code; 1 website, 1,000 visitors and 2,000 pageviews per month; at most 500 contacts; monthly billing.

ToolMonthly price for this workloadWhat the quote covers
Promolayer pricing$25 · BasicAt 2,000 monthly displays a coupon campaign fits Basic. Free can serve up to 1,000 displays.
Privy pricing$24 · Displays · 10,000 pageviewsDisplays include coupon codes on popups; the entry tier (10,000 pageviews) covers this traffic.
WooHoo pricing$7.99 · BasicAn offer for 1,000 visitors fits Basic.
SmashPops pricing$9 · BasicBasic covers 2,000 displays of a reward campaign.

Improve popup conversion with A/B testing

Compare the cost of a staffed experiment. Check the no-popup control separately from paying for two designs.

A/B-test two popup variants, for a promotional click or a form submission; 1 website, 1,000 visitors and 2,000 pageviews per month; at most 250 contacts; no email sending; monthly billing.

ToolMonthly price for this workloadWhat the quote covers
Promolayer pricing$25 · BasicBasic includes popup A/B testing and room for 2,000 monthly displays.
WooHoo pricing$7.99 · BasicBasic includes popup split tests for 1,000 visitors.
OptiMonk pricing$0 · FreeFree includes A/B testing; no feature upgrade is required.
Personizely pricing$59 · PremiumPremium includes widget A/B testing and covers 1,000 visitors. Essential URL/theme testing is not popup A/B testing.

When I’d keep Promolayer

Keep Promolayer when a narrow cart rule, an expiring code and a no-popup control already answer your marketing question. A large site with relatively few displayed offers can benefit from impression billing, even if another platform has a cheaper opening price.

Before changing platforms for a visual refresh, try a fresh display limited to one URL. A move becomes easier to justify when a required input step, product action, client permission or sending workflow is beyond what the current account can do.
