EmailOctopus Popup Integrations: Lists, Personalization Fields and Signup Tags
Compare four popup tools for EmailOctopus. Check the list ID, first-name field and source tag before connecting a newsletter signup.
A welcome email begins “Hi there” even though the reader typed a first name. The signup reached EmailOctopus, but the value may have gone into a different field from the one used by the template. Check that small handoff before investing in a more elaborate popup.
Choose a list and open a contact on it. Find the key the email actually uses for personalization. If the form should also mark the reader as coming from a particular offer, decide whether that belongs in a tag or in another field.
Compare against the EmailOctopus form you could already use
EmailOctopus’s native forms let you assign existing list tags automatically and add a consent checkbox. A publisher offering one newsletter may already have a workable solution. An external editor becomes interesting when you need richer display rules or multiple campaigns on the same site.
In Poptin’s setup, the “tag” for first name identifies a field. That is easy to confuse with a tag applied to a subscriber for segmentation. One supplies a value such as Jo; the other can group everyone who requested a book sample. Confirm both outputs independently.
What should your EmailOctopus popup send?
| Requirement | What to look for |
|---|---|
| List ID | A working account key can still point a campaign to the wrong list. Confirm the list used by the scheduled newsletter. |
| Personalization field | Copy the key for the field expected by your email. Test a missing first name as well as a supplied one. |
| Subscriber tag | Check that the external connector can apply the offer tag your segment uses. A mapped name alone cannot identify the promotion. |

Sorted by Popup Papa’s absolute capability score out of 100. This measures the overall toolkit, not the depth of this one integration. Prices are the directory’s Papa pick plans, not guaranteed minimum connector prices. Check the connector tier and capacity before buying; EmailOctopus and any bridge subscription are separate.

Starting points for different needs
Poptin
Useful if you want a documented setup for list ID and the first-name field. Its guide also identifies the other supported inputs.
Popupsmart
Consider it when the capture experience needs extra form elements. Match the fields on the actual popup to the receiving list.
OptinMonster
Try the direct campaign connection for targeted signups, then compare access to that feature with the option of embedding your existing form.
How each connection works
Connection details and plan conditions are shown below. The field tables describe the popup editor; supported transfer depends on the connector.
Poptin
Connection to EmailOctopus
In EmailOctopus, copy the list ID and the field tag for first name. Enter both with the API key in Poptin. Poptin documents name, email, phone and message; check the actual destination field before using any of them in a template.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Single choice | The inspected field offers Radio and Single-select display modes, with editable option labels and values. This confirms one selected answer; it does not establish a scored quiz or rating scale. |
| Email double opt-in | Choose a double opt-in setting for the popup or inherit the account setting. |
| Phone field | Collect a phone number in a dedicated contact field. |
| Free text | Collect a written response with the Message field. |
| Consent checkbox | Add an Email Consent checkbox alongside the signup fields. |
| Hidden fields | Set an input field to Hidden instead of displaying it to visitors. |
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
Unbranded popup campaigns with a practical visitor allowance. Email bundles are separate.
Poper
Connection to EmailOctopus
Add the API key in the popup’s EmailOctopus integration and select a target list. Map the captured values to fields that exist on that list. A personalization field can then hold an individual answer instead of assigning every subscriber the same label.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | Popup and standalone form editors offer a Phone field. This establishes number collection, not SMS consent or message delivery. |
| Free text | Standalone forms and surveys offer Short Text and Long Text fields for written answers. |
| Single choice | Dropdown and Radio controls are available in the popup, form and survey editors. |
| Multiple choice | The form and survey logic library offers a Checkbox Group for multiple choices. |
| Consent checkbox | The standalone form and survey libraries include a Terms control; popup forms offer a Checkbox element. Consent wording needs configuring for the intended use. |
| Hidden fields | The popup integration step offers hidden inputs. Forms and surveys also expose Hidden fields and a dedicated settings section. |
| Email capture | The AI-generated popup contains an email field. The Plinko editor also has an email gate before play. |
Papa’s take
Pro adds tests, games and integrations. The inspected monthly price is a promotion; confirm the traffic definition and ongoing rate before paying.
Popupsmart
Connection to EmailOctopus
Connect EmailOctopus in the campaign integration settings and complete Match Fields for the selected list. The transfer follows the inputs configured on the popup. Inspect a completed contact, including any attributes that the first newsletter uses.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | Collect a phone number with a dedicated Phone input. This field alone does not establish consent for SMS marketing. |
| Free text | Use Short Text or Long Input for written answers. The editor also provides name, address and date fields. |
| Single choice | Let visitors choose one answer through Single Choice or Dropdown. |
| Multiple choice | Let visitors select several answers with the Multiple Choice field. |
| Consent checkbox | Add the Notice and Consent element alongside form fields. |
| Hidden fields | Attach a Hidden Input to the submission without displaying another question. |
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
The first tier with A/B testing, plus two team members.
OptinMonster
Connection to EmailOctopus
Connect EmailOctopus from OptinMonster’s campaign integrations and choose the list to receive signups. Check the account’s access to this connector and use a fresh email for the first test. Previously deleted or subscribed addresses can behave differently when submitted again.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
Adds countdowns and advanced targeting. Renews at $870/year ($72.50/month).
How the connection changes the workflow
Example setups using the connections described above.
Fix the greeting before changing the email
Submit once with a distinct first name and once with only an address. In EmailOctopus, compare the value on the contact with the field referenced by the message. If the contact holds the correct name but the email uses a fallback, fix the template or its field reference.
If the value never arrived, inspect the form mapping for that list. A cloned campaign can retain an old list ID even when both lists contain a field displayed as First name.
Attribute a lead magnet on a shared list
A newsletter signup and a downloadable sample can share a list without promising the same follow-up. Give the sample a recognizable source or tag if your chosen route supports it. Decide how to fulfil the request for someone already receiving the newsletter.
Submit both offers with one address. Inspect the subscriber and any automation entries, then compare new unique contacts with total form completions. Those figures answer different editorial questions.
Head-to-head comparisons for EmailOctopus users
These comparisons cover the popup tools as a whole. Use them to compare forms, targeting and costs alongside the connection details above.
Popupsmart vs Poptin
Compare how the two editors collect extra answers for a personalized newsletter and what the popup subscription covers.
OptinMonster vs Poptin
Compare targeting and site allowances if an existing EmailOctopus list receives signups from several offers or domains.
Poptin vs Poper
For a reader’s first name and favourite topic, compare Poptin’s documented inputs with Poper’s field mapping for the selected list.
Check the whole journey before launch
Use a small test campaign with addresses you control. Check the receiving record and the follow-up, not only the popup’s success message.
- Confirm the list ID on the published campaign.
- Inspect the first-name field and preview the greeting.
- Check the actual offer tag or source used by the target segment.
- Repeat the lead-magnet request with an existing subscriber.
Common questions
Is the first-name field tag a subscriber tag?
In Poptin’s walkthrough it identifies the first-name field on the list. Subscriber tags such as a lead-magnet label are separate.
Can EmailOctopus itself tag signups?
Yes. Its native form builder can apply a tag that exists on the connected list. Check the settings of an external popup separately.
How should I test personalization?
Use a distinctive first name, find it on the receiving contact and preview a message that reads that field. Repeat without a name to check the fallback.
