Best Popup Survey Tools

Six popup survey tools for collecting ratings, written feedback and customer preferences. Compare the questions they support, how their forms branch and where the answers go.

Popup survey tools, compared

A popup survey asks a question while the visitor is still on the website. It can collect a reaction to an article, a reason for abandoning a purchase or a rating of the browsing experience. The useful distinction between survey apps is what happens after the first answer: some collect a simple score, while others reveal a follow-up question or send the response into a customer profile.

This selection focuses on popup software with confirmed rating or NPS inputs as well as ordinary form controls. It includes six tools rather than stretching the list with every email form that can hold a text box. A product quiz and a satisfaction survey can share an editor, but they do different jobs.

Prices are the selected Papa pick plans, not guaranteed minimum survey prices. Branching, survey suites and publishing may require a different tier; the tool descriptions explain those distinctions.

What puts a tool higher on this list?

Popup Papa tests popup software and examines product documentation, pricing and published use cases. We assess tools against the same criteria, then give different capabilities more weight for different tasks. The numbers below are absolute scores: they do not depend on which other app a tool is compared with.

We use the website-feedback profile, which allocates 70% of the rating to forms and surveys. The remaining 30% covers the wider toolkit, including targeting, reporting and integrations. Within that profile, this shortlist requires a confirmed numerical, star, emoji, binary or NPS field. Tools are ordered by the same absolute scores used in the directory.

The score measures breadth of capabilities, not statistical sophistication or response quality. A tool with a true 0–10 NPS input does not automatically calculate an NPS report. A tool with a template called “NPS” may instead offer a 1–10 scale. Those differences are described below rather than hidden behind a generic survey label.

Getsitecontrol has a broad set of feedback inputs: NPS, stars, emoji and thumbs-up or thumbs-down choices, alongside radio buttons, dropdowns and written answers. A short reaction can remain a one-question widget, or a rating can lead into a comment explaining the response. That range makes it suitable for several feedback jobs without rebuilding every survey from an email signup template.

Conditional logic can change which fields appear or send a visitor to a different step. A poor rating can therefore be followed by a reason question, while a positive response can finish immediately. Hidden fields and field mapping add context to submitted answers and pass values to an external service. This is particularly useful when the same survey runs on different pages or needs to join an existing customer record.

Pro includes the advanced logic and targeting controls, while Free provides basic widget tools. The allowance counts widget views per site, so a survey shown only on selected pages has a different capacity profile from software counting every site pageview. Email delivery is available separately, but it is not necessary for an anonymous feedback widget. Its position here comes from the combination of survey formats and flexible form controls.

Plan to compare

Pro unlocks the full feature set and removes branding. Pro Max adds unlimited widget views and a lower email sending rate, rather than more features.

Poper combines popup campaigns with dedicated form, survey and quiz editors. Its NPS template pairs a 0–10 recommendation question with a written reason and an optional email address. Other survey fields include stars, emoji and thumbs-up or thumbs-down answers. These support both quick reactions and a longer explanation without making contact collection the main purpose of the survey.

The survey builder offers one-question-at-a-time layouts and conditional splits. Its quiz editor serves a different purpose, with scored, personality and product-recommendation modes. A pass score or product outcome is useful in an assessment or recommendation flow, but should not be confused with a satisfaction rating. The distinction matters when choosing which editor and result type to use.

The pricing comparison puts the survey suite and conditional branching on Business, above the Pro plan shown as the directory’s Papa pick. Pro is selected for the broader popup and games package, not as a promise that every survey feature is included. The traffic selector and usage counter also use different labels, so the review separates the promotional price from the capacity terms.

Plan to compare

Pro combines A/B testing, games, advanced targeting and integrations. Business lists conditional branching and the survey suite. Free allowed one game in our account, but connecting integrations required an upgrade.

ConvertFlow approaches surveys as multi-step funnels. Questions can use text, images, icons or other answer presentations, and answers can be stored as custom-field values or contribute to a score. This is useful when feedback and qualification overlap: a visitor can identify a need, explain a problem and reach an appropriate outcome within the same campaign.

The editor supports short and long written responses, dropdowns, radio choices and additional field types. Conditional actions and skip logic can route visitors between steps, with those advanced actions requiring Pro. Product-finder quizzes can also connect to Shopify products, although recommendation outcomes are a separate use case from collecting impartial feedback about an experience.

The template named as an NPS satisfaction survey uses editable answers from 1 to 10 in the stored assessment. We treat that as a numerical rating, not standard 0–10 NPS. Free supports building and previewing, while live publishing requires a subscription. ConvertFlow therefore fits a structured funnel project better than a requirement for a permanently free feedback widget.

Plan to compare

Pro is justified when funnel tests and conditional product recommendations are required. For capture and CRM integrations without those features, Prime is the cheaper option.

Popupsmart includes star and emoji ratings, numerical opinion scales and ordinary choice or text inputs inside its popup editor. Rating fields have required-answer and action settings, while additional screens let a campaign collect an initial reaction before asking for an explanation. It can suit an existing popup programme that needs feedback alongside promotions and signup forms.

Its numerical scale supports 1–3, 1–5 and 1–10 ranges. Despite the editor’s Opinion Scale / NPS wording, the assessed control does not provide the standard 0–10 NPS range. Stars and emoji also communicate different meanings from a recommendation score. The available inputs are useful, but the survey should be described according to the scale actually shown to the respondent.

Free permits one live popup within its pageview allowance. The selected Advanced plan adds A/B testing and more site capacity; Basic removes branding but does not include that testing tier. Popupsmart counts website pageviews rather than only completed surveys or visible rating widgets, so a small feedback sample can still sit on a much larger billable traffic base.

Plan to compare

Advanced is the first tier with A/B testing and supports two team members. Basic is cheaper when neither experiments nor a second team member is needed.

Claspo has separate NPS and rating components, together with text areas, radio buttons and dropdowns. Its NPS input uses the expected 0–10 range, while the rating component provides an interactive star response. A business can therefore distinguish willingness to recommend from satisfaction with a particular page or interaction.

Multi-step forms and conditional form logic allow a follow-up question to depend on the previous response. This is useful for separating a quick score from a detailed comment, or for keeping irrelevant questions away from someone whose first answer already explains their situation. The existence of an NPS component establishes collection of the scale, not automatic calculation of a company-wide loyalty metric.

Claspo also supports collaboration in its web app, with different roles and site access. Its Shopify account has a different documented permission scope, so an agency should not assume that the same team arrangement applies to both products. The full review separates those account details from the widget features and the chosen plan’s traffic allowance.

Plan to compare

The free plan already includes the feature set. Choose the 50K tier for an unbranded site or traffic above 3,000 pageviews; otherwise Free can be enough.

Wisepops combines feedback collection with a broader onsite campaign system. Its survey controls include a 0–10 NPS question, text responses, radio buttons and dropdowns. Multi-step templates can branch from an initial answer into different follow-up screens, so a question can continue as a conversation instead of ending with a single undifferentiated response.

The Branch block routes answers to different steps, and buttons can open a URL, jump to an anchor, advance the form or close it. This makes the boundary between research and assistance important: a survey can collect a reason, then direct the visitor to relevant information, but the click and the submitted answer are different results. NPS collection alone also does not establish a complete NPS reporting system.

Wisepops is a broader purchase than a lightweight standalone rating widget. The selected commercial offer is quote-sensitive, and the review explains its scope. Its attraction for a team already running onsite campaigns is the ability to add feedback within the same audience and campaign environment, rather than introduce another unrelated popup layer.

Plan to compare

This is a managed onsite marketing offer, not a low-cost self-service popup plan. Shortlist it when strategy and service are part of the requirement; confirm the quoted scope and final fee.

Campaigns in practice

Published examples show different roles for a survey: diagnosing a purchase barrier, inviting product input or asking about an order. These are vendor examples, not a head-to-head test of the tools, and a case using another app does not change the shortlist’s selection rules.

Flip: asking why the purchase did not happen

OptiMonk describes an exit survey shown to people who visited Flip’s sales page without buying. The team gathered feedback from 300 visitors and used it to revise the website and sales funnel. The useful result was the explanation of a purchase barrier, rather than an email address or a click-through rate.

Asphalte: inviting people into product development

Wisepops shows Asphalte using unconventional popup messages to invite visitors into a survey rather than offering an ordinary discount. The invitation connects participation with the brand’s product-development model. This is a research-led reason to engage: the next step is giving an opinion, not automatically accepting a sales promotion.

PhysioVit: feedback after the order

The same OptiMonk guide includes a PhysioVit example asking for feedback after an order. That timing asks about a completed buying experience, whereas Flip’s exit survey asks about an unfinished one. Pooling the two audiences would blur very different questions, even if both campaigns use the same survey software.

How these tools differ

A rating scale is not interchangeable with NPS

Getsitecontrol, Poper, Claspo and Wisepops have confirmed 0–10 NPS inputs. Popupsmart and the assessed ConvertFlow template provide numerical ratings with a different starting point. A 1–10 response should not be presented as standard NPS merely because the template name uses that term.

Stars and emoji offer a quicker visual reaction, while a recommendation question asks something more specific. The choice determines what a result means before any dashboard or export becomes involved. A positive star rating about an article is not the same statement as willingness to recommend the company.

Conditional fields and conditional steps

Getsitecontrol can change individual fields and move between screens based on answers. Poper and Claspo also provide conditional survey or form routes; ConvertFlow supports conditional actions and skip logic. These approaches differ from simply putting a second screen after the first.

A fixed sequence asks everyone the same follow-up. Branching can separate a delivery complaint from a product question or ask for detail only after a low score. Paid-tier restrictions matter here: Poper lists branching on Business, while ConvertFlow gates conditional actions behind Pro.

Anonymous feedback or a contact record

A survey can ask for an email address, but collecting one changes its purpose. An anonymous page reaction can reveal broad friction; an identified support request needs a way to continue the conversation. Poper’s NPS template makes email optional, which illustrates that the rating and the contact are separate parts of the response.

Mapping also matters when answers move to a CRM. A readable sentence in a notification is different from a structured field that a team can filter or route. Getsitecontrol’s mapping and ConvertFlow’s custom-field values are relevant when the response has to remain useful outside the popup.

Integration routesHubSpot connections

Who receives the question changes the evidence

An exit survey samples people about to leave. A post-order survey samples buyers. A persistent feedback button samples visitors motivated enough to open it themselves. These audiences can produce different answers even with identical wording and the same app.

Targeting by page, visitor conditions or trigger makes a popup survey more contextual than a generic survey link. It also limits what can be concluded from the results. A complaint found on one product page is evidence about that experience, not automatically about every customer.

Collection, reporting and follow-up are separate capabilities

A stored answer, a calculated score and an automated follow-up are different operations. NPS inputs establish that the question can be asked; they do not by themselves establish trend reporting, response weighting or statistical analysis. The individual review sections show which reporting features each product has.

Similarly, a branch that sends a visitor to a help page does not prove that a support ticket was created. Teams using surveys for service recovery need the destination record and the original answer to stay connected. The popup is the collection point in that workflow.

Pricing follows the campaign infrastructure

Getsitecontrol counts widget views, Popupsmart counts pageviews, and ConvertFlow requires paid publishing even though its editor is free to explore. Those differences can outweigh a small gap between advertised entry prices. A feedback form shown to a narrow audience may consume little display capacity but still sit on a busy website.

The selected plan in the table describes the wider product. Survey-specific gates are explained in each tool section, especially for Poper’s suite and advanced branching. This keeps the score, the product’s capabilities and the price of a particular configuration distinct.

Six settings that define a popup survey

These settings describe the response you will collect and the context that stays with it.

  1. Question type. A numerical score, recommendation scale, choice and written answer each produce a different kind of evidence.
  2. Audience. Buyers, non-buyers and returning visitors should remain identifiable as different groups.
  3. Follow-up route. Conditional fields and step branches determine which explanation follows each answer.
  4. Identity. An optional contact field lets someone request a reply without making identification mandatory for everyone.
  5. Destination. Exported answers need meaningful field names and page or campaign context.
  6. Reporting period. A campaign change can alter the responding audience; its results should remain distinguishable from earlier versions.

Common questions

What is the best popup survey tool?

Getsitecontrol leads this selection under our feedback profile, with several rating formats and conditional forms. Poper is also broad in survey formats, while ConvertFlow focuses on structured funnels. The best fit depends on whether you need a one-question reaction, a branched survey or a response delivered into another system.

Are popup survey apps different from survey software?

Popup survey apps collect answers inside a website visit. A standalone survey platform usually centres on the questionnaire and its distribution. Some tools combine both, but a popup builder’s reporting and advanced survey analysis should be assessed separately from its ability to display questions.

Which tools support NPS popups?

Getsitecontrol, Poper, Claspo and Wisepops have confirmed 0–10 NPS inputs in this selection. The numerical controls assessed in Popupsmart and ConvertFlow use different ranges. Collecting NPS responses does not automatically mean that a tool calculates and charts the final NPS metric.

Can a popup survey ask a different question after each answer?

Yes, with conditional form logic or branching. Getsitecontrol supports field and step conditions; Poper, Claspo and ConvertFlow also provide conditional routes. A multi-step form without conditions follows the same sequence for everyone, so multiple screens alone do not establish branching.

Can I send survey answers to HubSpot?

A compatible connector can deliver form answers as contact or other supported fields. The important part is whether the answer type and field mapping match the destination, especially for choices and multiple values. The HubSpot guide compares those routes.

Can I run a survey without collecting emails?

A feedback question does not inherently need an email field. Contact details are useful when a response needs a personal reply, but they should remain distinct from the rating or comment. The chosen template and its required-field settings determine whether an address is necessary.

Is there free popup survey software?

Several tools have free plans, but access to the full survey suite, branching and publishing differs. ConvertFlow’s free editor does not include live publishing, and Poper lists its survey suite on Business. A free popup allowance should not be read as confirmation that every feedback feature is free.

Should a survey appear on exit intent?

Exit intent is useful for asking about an unfinished visit, such as a reason for not buying. It samples a different audience from a post-order survey. Desktop exit detection and mobile triggers also differ, so the same campaign timing should not be assumed across devices.
