Ontraport Popup Integrations: Contact Tags, Custom Fields and Campaign Entry
Compare popup tools for Ontraport. Map qualifying answers to contacts, apply offer tags and verify the automation that sends the next message.
An online school offers a course outline and a call with an adviser. Both forms collect the same email and first name. Only the second should put someone in the adviser’s follow-up queue. Build the distinction into the contact data before assigning either form to a campaign.
Find an existing Ontraport contact who completed each journey successfully. Compare tags, fields and automation history. That gives the popup editor something more useful to reproduce than a screenshot of the old form.
Which part belongs in Ontraport?
An Ontraport form on an Ontraport page gives the team a native reference. For an external popup, decide whether Ontraport needs a contact, an updated field, a tag or a separate campaign action. A contact can hold all the right values and still miss a sequence that listens for another trigger.
OptiMonk asks for an API key authorized to add contacts and offers a campaign tag. Poper exposes tags and field mapping. ConvertFlow can load Ontraport tags and campaigns and map form or survey answers to existing fields. Compare the extra form capabilities against the permissions and plan you will actually use.
What should your Ontraport popup send?
| Requirement | What to look for |
|---|---|
| API identity | Check both the App ID and key where the connector requires them. Inspect the key’s allowed actions before testing. |
| Tag meaning | Use separate tags for independent requests when receiving both offers should start two different follow-ups. |
| Contact field | Map values that vary per applicant, such as course interest or company size, to the field the adviser reads. |
4 popup tools with a recorded Ontraport connection
Sorted by Popup Papa’s absolute capability score out of 100. This measures the overall toolkit, not the depth of this one integration. Prices are the directory’s Papa pick plans, not guaranteed minimum connector prices. Check the connector tier and capacity before buying; Ontraport and any bridge subscription are separate.

Starting points for different needs
OptiMonk
A practical fit when one popup should add a contact and apply an existing offer tag. Its setup identifies the necessary contact permission.
Poper
A candidate when one form needs a fixed offer tag and variable answers on the same contact.
ConvertFlow
Look here for a longer application funnel. It can use existing Ontraport fields for questions and separate automation actions for follow-up.
How each connection works
Connection details and plan conditions are shown below. The field tables describe the popup editor; supported transfer depends on the connector.
OptiMonk
Connection to Ontraport
Use an Ontraport App ID and API key with permission to add contacts. Choose an optional tag in the OptiMonk campaign; if you create the tag in Ontraport, refresh the choices before saving. Submissions add contacts with the selected tag.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Field mapping | Choose destination lists and map signup fields to email or CRM providers. |
| Phone field | The visual editor exposes a Phone field with a country selector. This establishes collection controls, not SMS consent or delivery. |
| Single choice | Radio options expose editable labels and recorded values. The connected field determines the choice type; switching type requires a new element. |
| Multiple choice | The native choice-group panel supports multiple checkbox options, with an optional required flag. |
| Consent checkbox | The test form rendered an unchecked, optional email-marketing checkbox. It is a recorded choice field.Email marketing consent · Privacy terms consent |
| Free text | The generated form includes an optional comment textarea. An AI revision removed an unwanted duplicate from the first page. |
| Email capture | The inspected email field exposes required-field and error-message settings. A separate Shopify test form rejected empty and malformed email and stored a valid synthetic response in OptiMonk. The earlier multi-step editor preview did not enforce validation. |
Papa’s take
A modest paid traffic tier for an active store; annual billing is cheaper.
Personizely
Connection to Ontraport
Personizely lists Ontraport for subscribers acquired through its list-building widgets. Connect the destination and inspect the receiving contact after a form submission. Its public listing does not establish a campaign-enrolment action or a mapping for a particular custom field.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | The form editor offers a Phone field. This alone does not establish SMS subscription or delivery. |
| Free text | Custom fields include text and textarea for free-text answers. |
| Single choice | Custom fields include select and radio controls for one answer. |
| Multiple choice | A multiple-choice custom field type is available. |
| Consent checkbox | Separate email marketing, SMS marketing and privacy consent fields are available.Email marketing consent · SMS marketing consent · Privacy terms consent |
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
Adds widget A/B testing and personalization; Essential has a different testing scope.
ConvertFlow
Connection to Ontraport
Connect the Ontraport App ID and API key in ConvertFlow, then select campaigns, tags or existing contact fields in the form actions. Survey answers can populate the matching field instead of remaining only in funnel reporting. Check plan access to this CRM route.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| SMS capture | Forms expose a Phone field and separate SMS Consent control; confirmation can use an SMS subscription code. Delivery depends on the connected service. |
| Phone field | Collect phone numbers with the built-in Phone field. SMS consent is a separate form control. |
| Single choice | Dropdown and radio fields collect one answer; survey answers can use text, images, icons, letters, emoji or colours. |
| Multiple choice | Radio/Checkbox Select fields and the survey Multi-Select setting allow multiple answers. |
| Free text | Text and Paragraph fields collect short or long written responses. Number, Date and Range fields are also available. |
| Consent checkbox | Separate Email Consent, SMS Consent and Privacy Consent controls are available in forms.Email marketing consent · SMS marketing consent · Privacy terms consent |
| Hidden fields | Hidden fields can carry extra values; field settings include prefilled values and URL-parameter mapping. |
| Email capture | The editor provides an Email field, prefilling and submission actions. Contacts can pass to a connected newsletter service or CRM. |
Papa’s take
For teams that need funnel A/B testing and conditional recommendations; simple lead capture can use a lower tier. Free is for building and previewing; going live requires a paid website plan. Integrations, validation and AI also consume a separate action allowance.
Poper
Connection to Ontraport
In the popup integration, supply the Ontraport API ID and key, choose the tag and map the form inputs to contact fields. Test that both the tag and a variable answer arrive on one person before attaching a follow-up sequence.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | Popup and standalone form editors offer a Phone field. This establishes number collection, not SMS consent or message delivery. |
| Free text | Standalone forms and surveys offer Short Text and Long Text fields for written answers. |
| Single choice | Dropdown and Radio controls are available in the popup, form and survey editors. |
| Multiple choice | The form and survey logic library offers a Checkbox Group for multiple choices. |
| Consent checkbox | The standalone form and survey libraries include a Terms control; popup forms offer a Checkbox element. Consent wording needs configuring for the intended use. |
| Hidden fields | The popup integration step offers hidden inputs. Forms and surveys also expose Hidden fields and a dedicated settings section. |
| Email capture | The AI-generated popup contains an email field. The Plinko editor also has an email gate before play. |
Papa’s take
Pro adds tests, games and integrations. The inspected monthly price is a promotion; confirm the traffic definition and ongoing rate before paying.
How the connection changes the workflow
Example setups using the connections described above.
A course enquiry becomes an adviser call
Ask the learner what course they are considering and when they want to start. Map both answers to contact fields. Reserve the callback request for an explicit action rather than treating every course-outline download as a request to speak.
Have an adviser open a submitted enquiry. They should be able to see the course, timing and reason for the call without checking a separate popup report. If the data arrived but no adviser was notified, inspect the downstream automation.
Deliver a second offer to the same learner
Start with a contact who has already received the free outline. Request an adviser session using that address. Inspect the pre-existing tag, the new signal and the resulting follow-up separately.
An automation based on a person’s first creation may work perfectly for a brand-new lead and never run for this learner. Test the setup with both people before switching the old form off.
Head-to-head comparisons for Ontraport users
These comparisons cover the popup tools as a whole. Use them to compare forms, targeting and costs alongside the connection details above.
ConvertFlow vs Personizely
Compare branching questions and campaign actions for a qualification form whose answers must be useful to an adviser in Ontraport.
ConvertFlow vs Poper
Compare a longer application that uses existing Ontraport fields with a single form that sends an offer tag and individual answers.
OptiMonk vs Personizely
Decide whether the priority is tagging a new contact for an offer or personalizing the onsite experience after identification.
Check the whole journey before launch
Use a small test campaign with addresses you control. Check the receiving record and the follow-up, not only the popup’s success message.
- Confirm the key can perform the contact operation the form uses.
- Inspect a variable answer and a fixed offer tag on the same record.
- Follow the adviser assignment or email to its actual destination.
- Submit a second offer without deleting the existing contact.
Common questions
Do I need to create Ontraport fields first?
ConvertFlow’s field selector uses fields already present in Ontraport. Prepare the receiving fields before mapping the questions.
Can a tag trigger the wrong offer?
It can if an existing automation already watches that tag. Check its usage and test before applying it to production signups.
Does the Personizely listing establish campaign enrolment?
It describes growing the Ontraport audience through signup widgets. Confirm any additional action you need, such as adding a particular campaign or custom value.
