SmartrMail Popup Integrations: Subscriber Lists, Store Customers and Form Fields
Compare popup tools for SmartrMail. Choose a list for website signups, connect the correct popup ID and keep signup consent distinct from store customer imports.
A store customer already appears in SmartrMail because they bought something last week. Today they enter an email to receive a restock newsletter. Searching for their address alone cannot tell you whether the second action worked. Inspect the subscriber list created for the new offer.
This is especially important when a shop moves from one popup builder to another. The store’s customer import can continue to look healthy even while the new popup sends every signup to an obsolete list.
Start with a list the merchandising team controls
SmartrMail’s help explains that lists used to create custom fields must be manually created rather than imported from a platform such as Shopify. It also explains how fields created on one list become available across lists. Set up the receiving field before asking shoppers to supply that detail.
Personizely recommends a manually created list for popup subscribers. Poptin puts the SmartrMail key and list ID in the popup. Wisepops reverses the setup location: the merchant opens the SmartrMail list and enters a Wisepops key and popup ID. These routes need different checks after cloning a design.
What should your SmartrMail popup send?
| Requirement | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Signup versus purchase | Choose a list representing the offer. A shopper’s presence in an imported customer list only proves the store already knew them. |
| Popup ID | Where SmartrMail pulls signups for a specified popup, confirm the ID again when replacing the design with a copy. |
| Custom field | Create the destination field on a suitable list and check that the selected connector writes the shopper’s answer there. |

Sorted by Popup Papa’s absolute capability score out of 100. This measures the overall toolkit, not the depth of this one integration. Prices are the directory’s Papa pick plans, not guaranteed minimum connector prices. Check the connector tier and capacity before buying; SmartrMail and any bridge subscription are separate.

Starting points for different needs
Personizely
Useful for separating widget subscribers from the main store customer import. Configure the action and receiving list on the form.
Wisepops
Consider this route when the email team should control which popup feeds its list. The documented connection is configured on the SmartrMail side.
Justuno
Suitable for a store that has several promotion steps. Connect the specific design containing the form and choose the subscriber destination there.
How each connection works
Connection details and plan conditions are shown below. The field tables describe the popup editor; supported transfer depends on the connector.
Poptin
Connection to SmartrMail
Copy the API key from SmartrMail’s integration settings and the list ID from the subscriber list URL. Enter both under Email and Integrations on the poptin and approve. The guide confirms lead delivery to the list but gives no complete extra-field map.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Single choice | The inspected field offers Radio and Single-select display modes, with editable option labels and values. This confirms one selected answer; it does not establish a scored quiz or rating scale. |
| Email double opt-in | Choose a double opt-in setting for the popup or inherit the account setting. |
| Phone field | Collect a phone number in a dedicated contact field. |
| Free text | Collect a written response with the Message field. |
| Consent checkbox | Add an Email Consent checkbox alongside the signup fields. |
| Hidden fields | Set an input field to Hidden instead of displaying it to visitors. |
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
Unbranded popup campaigns with a practical visitor allowance. Email bundles are separate.
Personizely
Connection to SmartrMail
Connect a SmartrMail API token and select the destination list in the widget’s subscription action. Personizely recommends a manually created list for popup signups, separate from the customer list populated by the ecommerce integration.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | The form editor offers a Phone field. This alone does not establish SMS subscription or delivery. |
| Free text | Custom fields include text and textarea for free-text answers. |
| Single choice | Custom fields include select and radio controls for one answer. |
| Multiple choice | A multiple-choice custom field type is available. |
| Consent checkbox | Separate email marketing, SMS marketing and privacy consent fields are available.Email marketing consent · SMS marketing consent · Privacy terms consent |
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
Adds widget A/B testing and personalization; Essential has a different testing scope.
Justuno
Connection to SmartrMail
Authenticate SmartrMail with its API token, edit the Justuno workflow and enable Sync to App on the design step containing the form. Select the list for email signups and configure SMS subscribers if the design collects mobile numbers. Save and publish the promotion.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | The editor provides a Phone Number property and the inspected wheel template includes a country-aware mobile-number screen. |
| SMS capture | The wheel template separates mobile capture from email capture and includes SMS marketing consent copy, Terms and Privacy links. |
| Free text | Short Text and Long Text fields are available in the editor, alongside Date and profile properties. |
| Single choice | Radio Button and Single Select controls are available for collecting one answer. |
| Multiple choice | The field library includes Checkbox controls for selectable answers. |
| Consent checkbox | The editor exposes a Consent Checkbox and a separate SMS Opt-In Button. |
| Email capture | An Email Address field was added to an unpublished form. Required input, validation, duplicate handling and prefilling are available. |
Papa’s take
The self-service tier includes experiments without the managed-service fee.
Wisepops
Connection to SmartrMail
Start in SmartrMail on the subscriber list that should receive signups. Choose the Wisepops integration and enter the Wisepops API key and popup ID. A cloned popup has its own ID; check that the intended form is linked to the list.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | The form field menu includes Phone, separately from Email. |
| Free text | The question menu offers single-line Text and Multi-line text fields. |
| Single choice | Radio buttons and a Drop-down list are available in the question menu. |
| Multiple choice | The question menu includes Checkboxes for selecting multiple answers. |
| Hidden fields | Hidden field is available in the question menu for values that visitors do not enter visibly. |
| Email capture | Add an Email field to a form step. The inspected field can block addresses already collected. |
Papa’s take
For teams buying a managed onsite program, rather than just a popup editor. Final scope needs a quote.
How the connection changes the workflow
Example setups using the connections described above.
Replace a discount popup before a sale
Copying the old design can produce a new popup ID. With Wisepops, inspect the ID on the receiving SmartrMail list. With Poptin, inspect the destination list ID inside the newly published popup. The two routes put the easily missed setting on opposite sides.
Test the new popup from the sale page and find that signup on the sale list. Then disable the old form and repeat from a fresh session. This catches a promotion that appeared to work only because the old form was still active.
Follow a customer who later joins the newsletter
Start with a test customer already imported from the store. Submit the signup and inspect the newsletter list, any collected preference and the first scheduled email. Use the form’s subscription action as the reference point for timing.
Compare that journey with a visitor who has never bought anything. If only a new customer receives the welcome offer, inspect the workflow trigger and existing membership before changing the popup’s design.
Head-to-head comparisons for SmartrMail users
These comparisons cover the popup tools as a whole. Use them to compare forms, targeting and costs alongside the connection details above.
Justuno vs Wisepops
Compare how store campaigns handle returning shoppers, then verify which design or popup ID is connected to the SmartrMail list.
Poptin vs Wisepops
Compare a form configured with the receiving list ID against one selected in SmartrMail by its popup ID, alongside costs and campaign controls.
Poptin vs Personizely
Compare handing a new address to SmartrMail with planning what the subscriber should see back on the storefront.
Check the whole journey before launch
Use a small test campaign with addresses you control. Check the receiving record and the follow-up, not only the popup’s success message.
- Create the intended signup list and required custom fields.
- Check the list ID or popup ID on the side that owns the connection.
- Test a known store customer as well as a new address.
- Inspect the first mailing without counting a purchase import as a form signup.
Common questions
Which side holds the Wisepops connection?
SmartrMail’s list settings take the Wisepops API key and popup ID. Recheck the ID whenever a campaign is duplicated.
Does Poptin have a documented SmartrMail route?
Yes. Poptin’s guide shows entering a SmartrMail API key and subscriber list ID in the popup’s integration settings.
Can I create custom fields on a Shopify-imported list?
SmartrMail directs users to create them on a manually created list. Check its field guide and inspect what your popup actually sends.
