SendGrid Popup Integrations: Marketing Contacts, Lists and API Keys
Compare eight popup tools with recorded SendGrid connections. See which add marketing contacts, which fields they transfer and which API permissions they request.
A store emails thousands of receipts through Twilio SendGrid. Now it wants to collect newsletter signups. The successful delivery of a receipt tells the store its sending setup works. It tells the newsletter editor nothing about whether that shopper belongs to a marketing list.
Seven tools below document a SendGrid signup route. Privy is marked in the connection notes because its direct setup is unconfirmed. Find the destination under Marketing → Contacts before choosing the popup. Then decide whether you need just the address, a name and phone, or custom values such as preferred language and signup source. The tools below differ both in the fields they transfer and in the permissions they request.
Follow the contact into Marketing Campaigns
Twilio exposes separate operations for sending a message and adding or updating a marketing contact. The contact operation can include list IDs and custom fields. It processes requests asynchronously: a successful acceptance returns a job ID. When diagnosing a custom connection, allow the job to finish and then look up the contact.
A popup tool can handle that API work for you. Poptin even sends a test lead after setup. A sample record verifies a connection, but the real form can still omit a phone number or a source label. Submit the live form with an address you control and inspect the actual list entry.
What should your SendGrid popup send?
| Requirement | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Operation | Choose a contact or list operation for newsletter capture. Sending an email to the shopper proves a separate delivery path. |
| Destination list | Record the list ID for connectors that require it. Search both All Contacts and the intended list when the signup appears to be missing. |
| Key permissions | Compare the permission scope in the connector’s own instructions. Claspo specifies Marketing access on a restricted key; Wisepops and Poptin document full-access keys. |
| Custom fields | Create the destination field with the right type. For a custom API connection, use its SendGrid field ID; for a built-in connector, map the field using the choices it exposes. |
| Delivery eligibility | Check suppression status separately from list membership. A record in Marketing Contacts alone is insufficient evidence that a newsletter can reach it. |
8 popup tools with a recorded SendGrid connection
Sorted by Popup Papa’s absolute capability score out of 100. This measures the overall toolkit, not the depth of this one integration. Prices are the directory’s Papa pick plans, not guaranteed minimum connector prices. Check the connector tier and capacity before buying; SendGrid and any bridge subscription are separate.

Starting points for different needs
Claspo
Start here when the team wants a key limited to Marketing and needs a fixed offer identifier alongside the email address. Its guide documents both.
Poptin
Useful for a simple list with name, email and phone. The setup names these fields explicitly and identifies the list using its ID.
Popupsmart
Consider it when the signup carries context from the site as well as a visitor’s answers. Its field sources include form inputs, browser information, values passed by JavaScript and static text.
How each connection works
Connection details and plan conditions are shown below. The field tables describe the popup editor; supported transfer depends on the connector.
Privy
Connection to SendGrid
Direct SendGrid list setup and supported fields are unconfirmed for current Privy accounts. A custom route is possible: send a Privy signup webhook to your own service, then submit the email and destination list ID to SendGrid’s Marketing Contacts API. Your service must map any extra properties and check the result of the contact update.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | Collect a phone number in a separate signup step. Phone capture alone does not make the contact textable. |
| SMS capture | The editor includes SMS opt-in. Native texting requires an eligible plan and a verified toll-free number. |
| Free text | The classic field library offers text and date fields for additional shopper information. |
| Single choice | Collect one answer with radio buttons or a dropdown. The mini-quiz maps answers to a named contact property. |
| Multiple choice | The classic field library includes multiple-select checkboxes and subscription multi-select fields. |
| Consent checkbox | Email Opt-In and Text Opt-In fields are available in the classic form library.Email marketing consent · SMS marketing consent |
| Hidden fields | Add hidden profile attributes such as UTM values, signup date or a custom value. |
| Email double opt-in | Display settings offer single or double email opt-in. |
| Email capture | Email is a default form field in displays; an email or a phone field is required to create a contact. |
| Field mapping | Sign-up fields sync to linked email and SMS platforms; custom properties map by matching internal names rather than a visual mapper. |
Papa’s take
A small step up from popup-only pricing adds email follow-up in the same product.
OptiMonk
Connection to SendGrid
Select SendGrid in the OptiMonk campaign’s integration settings and supply the SendGrid API key. The guide describes adding form subscribers to the mailing list but gives no field-by-field mapping. Confirm any extra attributes inside Marketing Contacts.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Field mapping | Choose destination lists and map signup fields to email or CRM providers. |
| Phone field | The visual editor exposes a Phone field with a country selector. This establishes collection controls, not SMS consent or delivery. |
| Single choice | Radio options expose editable labels and recorded values. The connected field determines the choice type; switching type requires a new element. |
| Multiple choice | The native choice-group panel supports multiple checkbox options, with an optional required flag. |
| Consent checkbox | The test form rendered an unchecked, optional email-marketing checkbox. It is a recorded choice field.Email marketing consent · Privacy terms consent |
| Free text | The generated form includes an optional comment textarea. An AI revision removed an unwanted duplicate from the first page. |
| Email capture | The inspected email field exposes required-field and error-message settings. A separate Shopify test form rejected empty and malformed email and stored a valid synthetic response in OptiMonk. The earlier multi-step editor preview did not enforce validation. |
Papa’s take
A modest paid traffic tier for an active store; annual billing is cheaper.
Poptin
Connection to SendGrid
Enter a SendGrid API key and the list ID from Marketing → Contacts in the poptin’s integration settings. Poptin sends a test lead to the selected list and documents name, email and phone. Verify a real form submission separately from the setup test.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Single choice | The inspected field offers Radio and Single-select display modes, with editable option labels and values. This confirms one selected answer; it does not establish a scored quiz or rating scale. |
| Email double opt-in | Choose a double opt-in setting for the popup or inherit the account setting. |
| Phone field | Collect a phone number in a dedicated contact field. |
| Free text | Collect a written response with the Message field. |
| Consent checkbox | Add an Email Consent checkbox alongside the signup fields. |
| Hidden fields | Set an input field to Hidden instead of displaying it to visitors. |
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
Unbranded popup campaigns with a practical visitor allowance. Email bundles are separate.
Personizely
Connection to SendGrid
Connect SendGrid using an API key in Personizely settings, then configure the SendGrid action on the widget’s subscription form and choose the list. This sends signup addresses to Marketing Contacts. Check any additional profile attributes on the receiving contact.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | The form editor offers a Phone field. This alone does not establish SMS subscription or delivery. |
| Free text | Custom fields include text and textarea for free-text answers. |
| Single choice | Custom fields include select and radio controls for one answer. |
| Multiple choice | A multiple-choice custom field type is available. |
| Consent checkbox | Separate email marketing, SMS marketing and privacy consent fields are available.Email marketing consent · SMS marketing consent · Privacy terms consent |
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
Adds widget A/B testing and personalization; Essential has a different testing scope.
Popupsmart
Connection to SendGrid
Connect a SendGrid API key, select the marketing list and map the form fields. Popupsmart also supports mapping browser or device information, a value supplied through its JavaScript API, or a fixed source label. SendGrid handles subsequent email delivery.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | Collect a phone number with a dedicated Phone input. This field alone does not establish consent for SMS marketing. |
| Free text | Use Short Text or Long Input for written answers. The editor also provides name, address and date fields. |
| Single choice | Let visitors choose one answer through Single Choice or Dropdown. |
| Multiple choice | Let visitors select several answers with the Multiple Choice field. |
| Consent checkbox | Add the Notice and Consent element alongside form fields. |
| Hidden fields | Attach a Hidden Input to the submission without displaying another question. |
| Email capture | Collect email addresses through signup forms and pass new contacts to the connected mailing list. |
Papa’s take
The first tier with A/B testing, plus two team members.
Justuno
Connection to SendGrid
Connect the SendGrid app with an API key and configure the properties in the Justuno workflow. Match custom fields with their exact SendGrid names, including case. The documented workflow exports contact data; a successful API connection by itself does not trigger a newsletter.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | The editor provides a Phone Number property and the inspected wheel template includes a country-aware mobile-number screen. |
| SMS capture | The wheel template separates mobile capture from email capture and includes SMS marketing consent copy, Terms and Privacy links. |
| Free text | Short Text and Long Text fields are available in the editor, alongside Date and profile properties. |
| Single choice | Radio Button and Single Select controls are available for collecting one answer. |
| Multiple choice | The field library includes Checkbox controls for selectable answers. |
| Consent checkbox | The editor exposes a Consent Checkbox and a separate SMS Opt-In Button. |
| Email capture | An Email Address field was added to an unpublished form. Required input, validation, duplicate handling and prefilling are available. |
Papa’s take
The self-service tier includes experiments without the managed-service fee.
Wisepops
Connection to SendGrid
Paste a SendGrid key into the signup form’s sync settings, then choose the receiving list. Wisepops’ instructions request a full-access key. Check whether that permission fits your account policy before choosing this route for a straightforward email list.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | The form field menu includes Phone, separately from Email. |
| Free text | The question menu offers single-line Text and Multi-line text fields. |
| Single choice | Radio buttons and a Drop-down list are available in the question menu. |
| Multiple choice | The question menu includes Checkboxes for selecting multiple answers. |
| Hidden fields | Hidden field is available in the question menu for values that visitors do not enter visibly. |
| Email capture | Add an Email field to a form step. The inspected field can block addresses already collected. |
Papa’s take
For teams buying a managed onsite program, rather than just a popup editor. Final scope needs a quote.
Claspo
Connection to SendGrid
Create a restricted SendGrid key with Marketing access as specified in Claspo’s guide, then choose the list in the widget. Map email and any other supported form fields; static values can label the source. This lets a team identify the popup offer on the marketing contact.
| Editor capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Phone field | The editor provides a Phone field. This establishes phone collection, not SMS marketing consent or delivery. |
| Free text | Text input and Text area collect short and long written answers; Calendar and Date fields are also available. |
| Single choice | Dropdown and Radio components collect a single selected answer. |
| Consent checkbox | The component library includes Checkbox and Data processing and terms of use controls. |
| Hidden fields | Attach hidden fields to the widget submission through the editor’s hidden-field settings. |
| Email capture | The editor provides an Email field and a separate signup page in the inspected game template. |
Papa’s take
Removes branding and leaves room for a growing store. Shopify pricing is used here. Team invitations are documented for the web app, but its help center excludes Shopify accounts.
How the connection changes the workflow
Example setups using the connections described above.
A newsletter beside an existing receipt service
Create a small marketing list and a dedicated key according to the selected connector’s requirements. A store’s transactional mail key may be scoped only to sending. Ask the account owner to choose a connector whose requested permissions fit the store’s policy.
Submit a signup and open Marketing Contacts. Verify the email belongs to the test list. Then pass it through the same audience selection the newsletter editor uses. A test receipt is unnecessary here because it exercises a different SendGrid operation.
A bilingual site needs one audience per language
The website already knows which language page a visitor is reading. Decide whether that language is a useful default or whether the visitor should choose a preference explicitly. Put the chosen value in a dedicated contact field so the sending team can segment on it later.
Popupsmart supports several sources of mapped data, while Justuno’s instructions call out case-sensitive custom field names. Use two addresses on different language pages, then repeat with one existing address. Check which value survives and which audience would receive the next newsletter.
Head-to-head comparisons for SendGrid users
These comparisons cover the popup tools as a whole. Use them to compare forms, targeting and costs alongside the connection details above.
Popupsmart vs Poptin
Compare the two form builders when a SendGrid record needs site context as well as basic contact details.
Justuno vs Wisepops
Compare their onsite campaign controls if SendGrid will remain responsible for sending.
Poptin vs OptiMonk
For a straightforward marketing list, compare campaign limits and targeting before choosing the popup subscription.
OptiMonk vs Wisepops
If several promotions share a SendGrid list, compare how each tool assigns audiences and attributes signups to the campaign that collected them.
Poptin vs Claspo
For a newsletter beside a receipt service, compare the permissions requested, fields collected and list where the marketing contact lands.
Check the whole journey before launch
Use a small test campaign with addresses you control. Check the receiving record and the follow-up, not only the popup’s success message.
- Confirm the API key can write marketing contacts under your account’s policy.
- Check that a submission reaches the intended list, including its list ID.
- Inspect the contact’s name, phone and any custom values used for segmentation.
- Allow asynchronous contact processing to finish before treating a retry as necessary.
- Check a controlled suppressed address separately from a fresh deliverable address.
Common questions
Will a Mail Send key automatically add newsletter subscribers?
The documented contact integrations write to Marketing Contacts. A key used for sending needs the permissions required by the chosen contact connector; a delivered message does not show that the address was added to a list.
Can I use a restricted API key?
Claspo documents a restricted key with Marketing access. Compare the instructions for your actual popup tool, because some providers specify full access in their setup.
Why did the integration accept the request before the contact appeared?
Twilio processes the marketing contact update asynchronously. For a custom implementation, use the returned job identifier to check the result. With a built-in connector, inspect its sync result and the receiving list before submitting again.
